history

A district administration existed since January 14, 1879. With the establishment of the modern Japanese municipal structure, two cities and 15 villages ( mura ) belonged to it since April 1, 1889 . On July 12, 1904, Sakaki Village became a city. On April 17, 1940, the village of Togura became a city and on March 1, 1948, the village of Hanyū became a city, so that five cities and 12 villages belonged to Hanishina-gun. During the great territorial reform of the 50s ( shōwa daigappei ), the number of communes belonging to Hanishina-gun decreased very much. In 1960 only the cities of Matsushiro, Sakaki and Togura belonged to Hanishina-gun. The city of Matsushiro was merged with the independent city ( shi ) Nagano on October 16, 1966 . Togura was merged on September 1, 2003 with the city of Kamiyamada and the independent city of Kōshoku to form the new Chikuma , so that Hanishina-gun has only consisted of the city of Sakaki since then.
