Heiligenborn is one of the nine districts of the municipality of Driedorf in the Lahn-Dill district in Central Hesse . The place in the eastern Westerwald has about 170 inhabitants. It has the smallest demarcation of all Driedorf districts.

The place is on the eastern edge of the High Westerwald about 8 km southwest of Herborn and 45 km northeast of Montabaur . The distance to Siegen is about 42 km and Wetzlar 33 km. Heiligenborn is about 5 km from the Hessian border with Rhineland-Palatinate . The distance to the border triangle Hesse - Rhineland-Palatinate - North Rhine-Westphalia is about 8 km. The district of the place has a size of 1.07 km².

Heiligenborn borders exclusively on the towns of Driedorf and Roth . Both places belong to the municipality of Driedorf in the Lahn-Dill district.

The district is mainly on the Rehbach , a tributary of the dill . To the north of the town, already on the Roth boundary, the Rother Berg (572 m above sea ​​level) and the Oberster Berg (560 m above sea ​​level) rise .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1398 as Heiligenborn . Based on the place name and the location on the edge of the high Westerwald, the place can be assumed to have originated in the 10th century, during the last major state development phase .

In the Middle Ages, Heiligenborn belonged to the office and parish of Herborn. After 1591, however, the place was attached to the Driedorf office.

The long-distance trade route ran from Cologne to Leipzig via Altenkirchen and Herborn near the town . In the vicinity of the village, a Hohe Straße branched off to Frankfurt via Wetzlar.

With the construction of the first section of the Westerwaldquerbahn from Herborn to Driedorf, the place was connected to the railway network on May 1, 1906. By 1910, the line was extended via Westerburg to Montabaur. On May 31, 1966, the section of the Westerwaldquerbahn was finally shut down and partially dismantled.

Territorial reform

The municipalities Heiligenborn, Heisterberg and Hohenroth were on 1 October 1971 at the course of municipal reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the community Driedorf incorporated .
