Heinrich Friedrich Brehmer (common name Friedrich Brehmer , born November 25, 1815 in Hanover , † January 1, 1889 ibid) was a German medalist , coin engraver and goldsmith and the leading member of the Hanoverian Artists' Association .

Heinrich Brehmer was the son of a royal Hanoverian coin worker. After an apprenticeship as a goldsmith , he worked from 1834 to 1847 in Paris with Augustin-Alexandre Dumont and Étienne-Jules Ramey . But during that time he was - initially as a freelancer - from 1846, among other things for the coin Hannover ( mint active). Also in 1846 Brehmer joined the Hanover Artists 'Association and was one of the managing directors of this artists' association from 1862 to 1870 . Here he was mainly friends with the painter Edmund Koken .

In Hanover, from 1848 onwards, Brehmer manufactured the dies for almost all coins of the Kingdom of Hanover.

For his portraits of rulers Ernst August and George V George in 1857 awarded him the Golden Medal of Honor for Art and Science .

In 1864 Brehmer was given a permanent position at the royal mint with a fixed salary of 800 thalers . His excellent reputation, especially as a portraitist , was known beyond the state's borders and brought the Hanover Mint many orders from neighboring countries. Brehmer designed coins for the Duchy of Braunschweig (from 1864), for the city of Bremen (including the Börsentaler from 1864), the city of Hamburg (2000 ducats annually), the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe . In addition, he created numerous highly artistic medals on a wide variety of occasions.

In 1878 Brehmer retired.

Heinrich Bremer's tomb with a bust created by the sculptor Wilhelm Engelhard can be found in Hanover at the Engesohde city cemetery in department 40R , grave number 24 .

Brehmer evening

Heinrich Brehmer left 6000 gold marks from his fortune to the Hanover Art Association . The association's “Brehmer Evening”, which is celebrated annually on the artist's birthday on November 25th with the so-called “damp cover”, goes back to this legacy.
