Recording and publication

Greg Kurstin (2017)

Adele wrote the song Hello with Greg Kurstin, who also produced the song, in Chiswick . The development of the song took six months, since the contact with Kurstin was broken after the first half of the song was completed. Kurstin announced that he was not sure "if Adele will ever return to the completion of the song". The composition of bass, guitar, piano and keyboard is attributable to the student; Adele composed the drums. She described the development of the song as a major creative breakthrough that ended her writer's block.

Adele announced on October 22, 2015 on Twitter that Hello would be the first single from album 25 to be released on the same day. The following day, Adele premiered the song on Nick Grimshaw's show on BBC Radio 1 .

composition

Adele (live in Nashville 2016)

Hello is a soul piano ballad in F minor at a tempo of 79 beats per minute . Adele's singing ranges from the small f to the a ♭ ''.

The lyrics focus on topics such as nostalgia and regret in connection with one or more relationships from Adele's past. In an interview with Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio 1, she said: “I felt like we were all on the way, and it's not about a past relationship, a love affair, but my relationship with everyone I am love. It's not about what we leave behind, all of our lives never stand still and I had to write this song so they could all hear it because I'm out of touch with them. ”According to Adele, the line means“ Hello from the other side ”“ the other side of growing up, surviving the years around twenty ”.

reception

After its release, Hello received a particularly positive response in music journalism. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian described the song as "an important ballad, one of the most outstanding of its kind" and believes it is "exactly the kind of lovesick ballad that made Adele one of the greatest stars in the world." Emily Jupp of The Independent reviewed the song, saying "It may not be groundbreaking, but Adele's return with her signature 'smoky sound' is very welcome". She wrote, "She did the best she could, shouting emotional stories of love and loss like on her last album 21 , but this time with more forgiveness." Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune wrote, "Lyrics that are most effective, if she aims at personal details with a certain combination of her vocal power and control. "

Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph calls it "a song of loss and regret" in the context of "falling back on a kind of memory in the heart of the listener and mingling with Adele's own fate." Some publications such as Radio Times and The Daily Telegraph note that Adele's song shows many similarities with Hello by the American soul singer Lionel Richie .

Music video

The music video for the song was directed by Canadian actor and director Xavier Dolan and released on October 22, 2015. The video revolves around a woman who has just split up and is reviewing her past life in this regard. Some parts of the video, like opening your eyes at the beginning and ending at the pond, were filmed with IMAX cameras. It is the first music video to use the IMAX format. Dolan was inspired by his first semi-autobiographical debut, I Killed My Mother . The video was shot on a farm in Québec on a few days in September 2015 .

The video shows the American actor Tristan Wilds . During the shoot, Adele and Wilds improvised, delving into memories of their past relationships to convey their true emotions. Dolan also filmed Adele and Wilds while they were talking and laughing together. The video is sepia- colored and shows Adele singing in a house and in front of a dense forest, alternating with very sad scenes on the phone and looking back at the broken relationship with Wilds.

In 88 days, the video was viewed a billion times on Youtube. The previous record holder Gangnam Style from Psy needed 159 days.

Live performances

Adele first appeared live with Hello in the BBC hour special Adele at the BBC , which was recorded on November 2, 2015 and aired on November 20, 2015. She also performed at the 17th NRJ Music Awards on November 7, 2015 and Saturday Night Live on November 21, 2015. The first German live appearance took place on December 6, 2015 in the program Menschen, Bilder, Emotionen on the private broadcaster RTL .

influence

Regarding the US sales of Hello , Adele is credited with "widespread impact" and "incredible popularity". Forbes' Hugh McIntyre said song sales were very important at a time when no one was really spending money on music. The ten biggest debut sales weeks were six years ago when single sales through iTunes came to the fore and online markets took off. Streaming has become the norm for millions of people and has seen sales of singles and albums drop. The fact that Adele achieved enormously high sales figures with Hello in seven days speaks volumes.

Charts and sales

Hello reached number one on the charts in over twenty countries. In the United States alone, the single was downloaded over 1,112,000 times in its first week. It broke the record for most downloads in a week held since February 2009 by Flo Rida and Ke $ ha's Right Round with 636,000 units sold. In Germany, Hello, with ten weeks at the top of the single charts (as of January 4, 2016), is the most successful single by a British solo artist for more than fifty years. In addition, Hello reached the top position in the German airplay charts for eight weeks .
