NGC 2139 = IC 2154 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Rabbit in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 74 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on November 17, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with a 48 cm telescope; the discovery was later recorded in the New General Catalog . On December 1, 1897, the galaxy was also observed by Lewis A. Swift and listed in the Index Catalog .
