Name of the processor core: Kaby Lake

The Intel Xeon series based on the Intel Kaby Lake microarchitecture is a family of 64-bit microprocessors for servers and workstations from Intel . These multi-core processors with four cores so far represent the successors of the Intel Skylake microarchitecture- based Broadwell processors of the Intel Xeon family.

The Xeons of the Kaby Lake generation will only be sold in the single-socket workstation variant, called E3-v6 , when they were first released in March 2017 . This means that Intel sells Xeon E3 processors of three generations at the same time (see, E3-v4, E3-v5 and E3-v6 have the status "Launched", so they are still being sold) and deviates from its development strategy called "Tick-Tock" . Kaby Lake represents neither a "tick" (structural reduction through a new manufacturing process) nor a "tock" (further development of the microarchitecture), but rather an "optimization" within the 14 nm manufacturing process generations:

These models differ from the Core CPUs of the Kaby Lake generation (see list of Intel Core i processors ) mainly through the support of ECC main memory and otherwise correspond to the Core i7-7xxx variants.

Model parameters

A variety of models exist. The main parameters are:

  • The first digit of the four-digit product code indicates how many processors of this type can be used in parallel on a motherboard (number of sockets as opposed to number of cores).
  • Clock frequency (goes directly into the single-task performance and determines the performance of many programs)
  • 3rd level cache size (increases data throughput)
  • Number of cores (increases the number of tasks that can be processed simultaneously)
  • Thermal Design Power : Power loss, limits the intended use, the higher the size, the larger the cooling system and power supply must be, increases with the clock frequency, the number of cores and the size of the cache. The models with an L after the 4-digit product code are low-power versions with lower energy consumption for micro servers.
  • Integrated GPU : only interesting for workstations with low 3D graphics performance (see also Intel HD Graphics )

E3 models

As in the Skylake generation for Xeons, variants (E3-15xx v6) for so-called mobile workstations (mobile computers) with the solder base BGA1440 are listed.

In the E3 v6 generation, however, Intel does not integrate the "Iris Pro" processor graphics, which have a significantly higher performance than the HD Graphics P630.

The Platform Control Hub CM238 is specified as the chipset for the E3-15xx mobile versions. For the workstation versions E3-12xx, the chipsets C232 and C236 are specified, these processors are therefore socket-compatible with their predecessors from the Skylake generation. The connection from the chipset to the CPU is formed by a DMI , which here in version 3.0 with 8 GT / s per lane and 4 lanes has a transmission rate of 4 GB / sec.
