Karl Günter Wünsche (born June 9, 1931 in Löbau , Saxony , † March 19, 1996 in Berlin ) was a German poet , prose , radio play and screenwriter .

Life

Günter Wünsche was born as the son of a laborer and a farmer's daughter in Löbau, Saxony. From 1937 to 1945 he attended elementary school in Ebersdorf . In 1945 he began an apprenticeship as a toolmaker at Siemens-Schuckertwerke in Upper Lusatia . When the commanding company was dismantled in 1946, he felt a sense of relief. He continued his training at the Berzdorf lignite mine on the Eigen and became a machinist in 1949 . Thereupon the delegation took place through the company to the workers and farmers faculty Freiberg "Wilhelm Pieck", where in 1952 he acquired the school leaving certificate. He stayed in Freiberg and in 1952 began studying metallogy at the Bergakademie Freiberg , which he graduated in 1957 as a graduate engineer. During his time in Freiberg he worked at the Riesa steel and rolling mill (1950), the Berzdorf lignite works (1952) and the Döhlen stainless steel works (1954).

In 1958 he moved to Berlin and began to work literary there. The job he started with the move in a Berlin project planning company for road systems (research and development department on behalf of the Institute for Metallurgy and Materials Testing of the Freiberg Mining Academy) and two years later as a test engineer at the German Office for Material and Goods Testing of the GDR in Berlin-Adlershof lasted until June 1965. In 1961 two poems were accepted and published by the literary magazine Neue Deutsche Literatur . In 1964 he joined eleven others, including Joachim Priewe and Wolfgang Tilgner , to form the group of young authors "alex 64". In the same year Wünsche received a 2nd prize (a 1st prize was not awarded) in the writing competition organized by the Aufbau-Verlag . In 1964/65, while he was working as a test engineer, the Confidential Diary , which was widely criticized after publication, was created . Taking himself out of the line of fire, he initially concentrated on the studies that had begun in autumn 1965 at the "Johannes R. Becher" Institute for Literature in Leipzig. His professors included Georg Maurer and Werner Bräunig . In 1967 he finished his studies and 1968 is considered to be his first year as a freelance writer. That year he wrote a series of articles on futurology for the youth magazine Neues Leben . Before and afterwards, he had devoted himself to technical and economic aspects. In 1969 he joined the SED and in 1970 he became a member of the Writers' Union .

From 1973 to 1990, the Writers ' Association entrusted him with the management of the central working group “Writing Soldiers” in Strausberg , that is, the qualified accompaniment of autodidactic authors belonging to the NVA . In 1981 and again in 1986 the working group received the " Medal-awarded folk art collective of the German Democratic Republic ". In addition, from 1985 to 1990 he headed the circle of writing workers in the Kreiskulturhaus Berlin-Lichtenberg. In 1991/92 he was one of the founders of the Friedrichshagener Kreis in the New Society for Literature . In 1996 Günter Wünsche died in Berlin at the age of 64 after a serious illness.

effect

In the intellectual West German monthly Merkur , Wünsches poetry was perceived as a criticism of socialism . In fact, individual poems in the GDR made the cultural officials angry. Thus, rehabilitation of I to a "much-cited" and "controversial" example. The weekly newspaper Sonntag found the message for lovers of soft pillows to be provocative .

More far-reaching, however, was the criticism that arose after the publication of the reflections from the confidential diary in the autumn of 1965 within an almanac of the Aufbau Verlag, because in the wake of the policy of the 11th plenum , Günter Mittag (ab 1966 member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED ). First, in January, Wünsche was summoned for an internal discussion by the head of the ideological commission of the party organization State Planning Commission of the SED. In February, in his SED party university lecture , Mittag publicly condemned Wünsches' assessment of future planning and actual economic performance. “Art was not granted the right to interfere critically in economic and social difficulties,” summarizes the historian and literary scholar Simone Barck . The next step in the demonstration of power by the state party was to collect all tangible construction almanacs, including copies that had already been given to libraries. In 1991, Wunsch confessed that he had expected rejection and, as a result, the end of any entrustment to institutional work, but not a writing impairment.
