Jane Dee Hull (born August 8, 1935 in Kansas City , Missouri , † April 16, 2020 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). She was governor of the state of Arizona from 1997 to 2003 .

Early years and political advancement

Hull graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education . She did her PhD in Political Science and Economics from Arizona State University . She then graduated from the Josephson Ethics Institute . She was married to Terry Hull, with whom they had four children.

She decided to embark on a political career in 1979 by being elected to the Arizona House of Representatives . Between 1989 and 1992 she was the first woman to hold the office of Speaker of the House , succeeding Joe Lane . In 1993 she successfully ran for the office of Secretary of State , succeeding Democrat Richard D. Mahoney . She was the second woman to hold office and the first Republican member since 1931.

Governor of Arizona

Hull took office as governor of Arizona on September 8, 1997. She was re-elected for a second term. During her two terms in office, Hull made education, health, and the economy and the preservation of Arizona's natural beauty her primary concerns. In addition, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, she implemented the measures of the Department of Homeland Security to secure the people of Arizona. Their Students FIRST School Facilities Funding Program guaranteed equal treatment for every student in Arizona. Almost 136,000 children of the poorest working people received health protection thanks to the Governors KidsCare Program . Hull also signed a contract with Qwest Communications International Inc. that guaranteed Internet access to all public schools. Together with the Mexican authorities and other border governors, she worked intensively on trade issues.

Hull supported the death penalty . 14 people were executed in Arizona during her tenure. She became known in connection with the execution of the LaGrand brothers in 1999, which led to violent diplomatic protests from Germany.

Hull left office on January 6, 2003.
