Jonathan Hellmann

Thomas Jonathan Hellmann (born December 21, 1788 in Ludwigsburg , † March 25, 1855 in Neckarsteinach ) was a Hessian leather manufacturer and liberal politician and member of the 2nd Chamber of the Land estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Jonathan Hellmann was the son of the red tanner Jonathan Hellmann and his wife Eva Maria. Hellmann, who was Protestant, was a leather manufacturer in Neckarsteinach and married Johanna Wilhelmina Philippina. He invented a process for tanning leather with birch instead of oak bark.

He was a staunch liberal and was one of the preparers of the “black” state parliament in Zwingenberg in the constitutional discussion of the 1810s in the Grand Duchy. From 1826 to 1841 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Estates. He was first elected for the constituency Starkenburg 9 / Erbach , then for Upper Hesse 2 / Gladenbach and finally for Starkenburg 8 / Wald-Michelbach.
