Josef Brandauer

Josef Brandauer (born August 11, 1921 in Hallein ; † November 17, 1988 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and municipal official. From 1959 to 1974 he was a member of the Salzburg State Parliament and from 1969 to 1974 President of the State Parliament .

education and profession

Brandauer attended elementary and secondary school in Hallein and then graduated from commercial school in Salzburg. He then attended the commercial vocational school in Salzburg and worked there from 1938 to 1940 in a building materials and tools wholesaler. In 1940 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and was subsequently used for military service until 1945 during the Second World War. He returned from Soviet captivity in 1945 and joined the city of Hallein as an official in 1945, where he was employed as the city treasurer.

Politics and functions

After returning from the war, Brandauer joined the Social Democratic Party in 1945 and in 1950 took over the internal party function of SPÖ city party chairman von Hallein. In the same year he became district party chairman of the SPÖ Tennengau, and from 1945 to 1954 he was active as chairman of the provisional staff representation of the city of Hallein. On July 2, 1959 Brandauer was sworn in as a member of the Salzburg state parliament, of which he was a member until May 21, 1974. He was elected President of the State Parliament on May 14, 1969 and held this office until he left the State Parliament. He was involved in local politics from 1952 to 1954 as a member of the Hallein municipal council and chairman of the SPÖ municipal council, after which he was vice mayor from 1954 to 1958 and mayor of his home parish from 1958 to 1976.

Brandauer was from 1959 district chairman of the "Working Group of Socialist Community Representatives" in Tennengau and from 1959 to 1965 member of the state board of this association. Within the party, he also worked as a member of the regional party representation of the SPÖ Salzburg and from 1949 as chairman of the local group Hallein der Naturfreunde .
