Walter Thaler

Walter Thaler (born October 30, 1941 in St. Johann im Pongau ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and high school director. From 1982 to 2004 he was a member of the Salzburg state parliament and its second president from 1993 to 1999.

education and profession

Thaler attended elementary school between 1947 and 1951 and continued his education from 1951 at the Bundesrealgymnasium in St. Johann im Pongau. After graduating from high school in 1960, he studied English , German and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck from 1960 . In addition, he taught from 1963 to 1965 at the Hotel Management School Villa Bianca and at the Higher Technical Federal Teaching and Research Institute in Innsbruck. He completed his studies in 1965 with the academic degree Mag. Phil. and passed the teaching examination. In 1965 he became a teacher at the Bundesrealgymnasium Zell am See as well as at the BORG in Mittersill.In Zell am See he also held the office of school director from 1978 to 2000. He then studied political science at the University of Salzburg, where he obtained his doctorate in philosophy in 2005.

Politics and functions

Thaler headed the Salzburg Adult Education Center in Zell am See between 1967 and 1982 and was Deputy Chairman of the University Advisory Board of the University of Salzburg from 1999 to 2002. In 1999 he also took on the role of deputy chairman of the board of the Salzburg Adult Education Center. In 2003 he also became deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg and in 2005 deputy chairman of the supervisory board of the “Museum der Moderne - Rupertinum Betriebsges.mbH”. In the Social Democratic Party, he worked between 1971 and 1982 as city party chairman of the SPÖ in Zell am See, and in 1992 he was promoted to deputy district party chairman of the SPÖ Pinzgau. Within the party, he was also active as the state chairman of the Working Group of Social Democratic Municipal Representatives (ASG) from 1986 to 2000 and from 1982 chairman of the SPÖ parliamentary group in the state school board. At the state level, he was elected a member of the state party executive committee in 1984, where he held the office of deputy state party chairman of the SPÖ Salzburg from 1993 to 2005. Thaler was elected to the municipal council of Zell am See in 1969 and was Vice Mayor from 1974 to 1982. He directed the fortunes of Zell am See from 1982 to 1993 as mayor and was also sworn in on May 12, 1982 as a member of the Salzburg state parliament. In the SPÖ parliamentary group he worked between 1989 and 1991 as deputy club chairman and from 1999 to 2004 as club chairman, in between he was second president of the Salzburg state parliament from October 20, 1993 to April 26, 1999.

Since November 6, 2008, Thaler has been the honorary consul of the Republic of South Africa for the state of Salzburg.

Walter Thaler has been Honorary Senator of the Paracelsus Medical Private University in Salzburg since October 24, 2016.
