Joseph Wilson Prueher, Jr. (* 25. November 1942 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is a former admiral of the US Navy , diplomat and business leaders , who most recently between 1996 and 1999 Commander of United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) and 1999-2001 Ambassador was in the People's Republic of China .

Life

Naval officer and promotion to admiral

After attending the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville in 1960, Prueher began studying marine science at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science (BS Naval Science). This was followed by assignments as an officer and staff officer in various naval units. In addition, he completed postgraduate studies in international relations at George Washington University , which he completed with a Master of Science degree (MS International Relations), and a degree at Naval War College (NWC) in Newport . In 1989 he became Captain of the Sea Prueher Commandant of Midshipmen and as such was Deputy Commandant of the US Naval Academy until 1990 and was responsible for the training of the Naval Officer Candidates ( Midshipman ) .

In 1991, Prueher became flotilla admiral and commander of Carrier Group One . He released in December 1993 Vice Admiral Thomas J. Lopez as commander of the US Sixth Fleet ( US Sixth Fleet ) , and held that post until his replacement by Vice Admiral Donald L. Pilling in April 1995. He was also at this time in personal union also commander in Naples stationed Marineangriffs- and support forces of NATO in southern Europe STRIKFORNATO (Naval Striking and support forces Southern Europe) . In April 1995 he took over from Admiral Stanley R. Arthur as Vice Chief of Naval Operations and was thus deputy commander of naval operations and the second most senior officer in the US Navy until his replacement by Admiral Jay L. Johnson in April 1996.

Most recently, Prueher was on January 31, 1996, as the successor to Admiral Richard C. Macke, Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Command, one of six inter -armed forces regional commands of the US armed forces and responsible for the Pacific and Southeast Asian regions. On February 20, 1999, he handed this command over to Admiral Dennis C. Blair and retired.

Prueher has received several awards for his military services, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal , Legion of Merit , Meritorious Service Medal , Navy Achievement Medal , Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal .

Ambassador to the People's Republic of China and business manager

After his retirement from active military service, Prueher succeeded Jim Sasser as ambassador to the People's Republic of China on December 15, 1999 and held this office until May 1, 1999. He was succeeded on July 28, 1999 by Clark T. Randt , a lawyer specializing in Chinese law with the law firm Shearman & Sterling in New York City . During this time he was also involved in the Council of American Ambassadors , the American Academy of Diplomacy , the Council on Foreign Relations, as a board member in the National Committee on US-China Relations and as a member of the Board of Directors of Partnership for Public Service .

After leaving the diplomatic service, Prueher moved to the private sector and in 2001 became a board member of the conglomerate Emerson Electric Company , the financial services company Merrill Lynch and the life insurance company New York Life . He was also a board member in 2003 of the oil company Fluor Corporation , and also was a member of the boards of private security and military companies DynCorp , of McNeil Technologies and the Wornick Company .

He was also a professor at Stanford University and serves as a board member of the Montgomery Bell Academy .
