KOF Index of Globalization

The KOF Index of Globalization measures the extent of globalization in 185 countries and territories. The index was designed by the German economist Axel Dreher at the Economic Research Center at ETH Zurich . The index was first published in 2002. The latest edition is from 2017 and contains data from 2015.

The index is based on three primary criteria: economic globalization, cultural / social globalization and political globalization, for each of which an index value is determined.

methodology

The index is based on the following three pillars:

Economic globalization

Trade globalization : trade in goods as a share of GDP , trade in services as a share of GDP, diversification of trading partners, level of tariffs on imports, trade regulation

Financial globalization : Foreign direct investment as a percentage of GDP, extent of restrictions on foreign capital, amount of foreign transfers as a percentage of GDP, amount of foreign debt as a percentage of GDP, amount of foreign exchange reserves as a percentage of GDP

Social globalization

Interpersonal globalization: international telephone traffic, number of cell phones per capita, number of international tourists in relation to population, proportion of migrants in the population, number of international airports, freedom of travel

Globalization of information: number of patent applications by foreigners, number of foreign students in relation to population, proportion of high-tech exports as a proportion of total exports, proportion of households with television , proportion of households with internet connection , average internet speed, freedom of the press and media

Cultural globalization: Share of trade in cultural goods, share of trade in services, number of registered trade marks , number of McDonald’s branches per capita, number of IKEA shops per capita, gender equality, state education expenditure per capita, respect for civil rights

Political globalization

Total number of foreign embassies in a country, personal contribution to UN peacekeeping forces per capita, number of international non-governmental organizations , number of international organizations in which a country is a member, number of international agreements that a country has signed, number of partner countries with which international agreements have been concluded

Ranking list

Countries according to the globalization index 2017. All data apply to the year 2015. The index values ​​for economic, social and political globalization and the resulting overall index are given. The higher the index value, the greater the degree of globalization.
