Kalle Blomquist

Kalle Blomquist [ ˈkalə ˈbloːmkvɪst ] ( Swedish Kalle Blomkvist ) is a children's book character by Astrid Lindgren . The three novels about Kalle Blomquist ( master detective Blomquist , Kalle Blomquist lives dangerously and Kalle Blomquist, Eva-Lotta and Rasmus ), each set at intervals of one year, depict the exciting adventures of a group of young people in a small Swedish town in a realistic style.

Kalle Blomquist

Kalle (real name Karl) - 13 years old in the first volume - lives in the fictional town of Kleinköping (originally Lillköping ), Hauptstraße 14, in Sweden. His father runs a grocery store. Kalle is a passionate crime thriller and raves about the novel detectives Hercule Poirot , Lord Peter Wimsey , Asbjörn Krag and Sherlock Holmes . In his imagination, Kalle is a world-famous detective himself . He likes to lie in the garden at home under a tree and tell his fictional adventures to an admirer who comes from his imagination.

Although Kalle is always laughed at by his friends for believing himself to be a famous detective, he still has a great sense of crime and skill. So he also solves three spectacular cases.

Kalles best friends are Anders Bengtsson and Eva-Lotta Lisander, who are of the same age.

Anders is Kalle Blomquist's best friend and lives in poor conditions in Kleinköping. His father has a shoemaker's workshop and is very strict with him. According to Anders' statements, his father beats him almost every day at home. That is why he stays at home as rarely as possible. Different is a fun-loving boy and always up for fun or an adventure. Like Kalle, he is in love with Eva-Lotta Lisander and wants to marry her one day. Anders is the leader of the White Rose, the gang of Anders, Kalle and Eva-Lotta.

Eva-Lotta Lisander

Eva-Lotta is an integral part of the gang and eagerly involved in the "War of the Roses". Her father owns the Kleinköping bakery. Eva-Lotta loves to spend her time with her best friends Kalle and Anders. When policeman Björk once noticed that she could be a bit more girlish, she laughed and replied to postpone it to Montage. She has a cat named Tusse. In previous German editions her name was Eva-Lotte.

Policeman Björk

Björk is a police officer in Kleinköping. He is very popular with Anders, Eva-Lotta and Kalle, they call him Uncle Björk. Björk often makes fun of Kalle's ambitions to be a detective, but he values him as a bright, intelligent boy.

Benka, Jonte and Sixtus

Benka, Jonte and Sixtus (in the original and in some translations Sixten ) form the Red Rose , which is in a feigned war with the White Rose by Anders, Eva-Lotta and Kalle. In reality, the six are best friends.

War of the roses

The "War of the Roses" is a fake war between the two gangs, the "White Rose" and the "Red Rose". This has long been held by the children mostly over the summer holidays. A recurring motif of this war is to steal the grandmummrich (in the original Stormumriken ) from the respective owner , a somewhat specially shaped stone that, with a little imagination, should have the shape of a small, seated man. This results in night chases, fights or the capture of opponents, smear letters and much more. The historical models are the Wars of the Roses for rule in England in the 15th century.

Predatory language

The "predatory language" is the secret language of the White Rose. It is said to have been used by vagabonds, vagabonds and robbers in the past. Eva-Lotta learned it from her father.

The predatory language enables the members of the White Rose to converse without the opposing Red Rose understanding their conversation: You simply double each consonant and put an "o" in between. The tree house becomes: Bob au mom hoh au sos, the street: Sos tot ror a sos sos e etc.

After the robber language helped them to arrest the murderer in the second volume, the white roses reveal the key to the secret language to the red ones.

Eva-Lotta's parents get a visit from Mrs. Lisander's cousin Einar. Eva-Lotta and her friends Kalle and Anders didn't like Uncle Einar from the start. Above all, Kalle noticed his extremely nervous and strange behavior. He shadows him and secretly takes Einar's fingerprints with the help of an ink pad. Kalle finds out that Einar was involved in a jewel heist and is hiding from his accomplices with the loot.

When the accomplices track down Einar in Kleinköping, events roll over. Kalle, Eva-Lotta and Anders are in great danger when they try to get the booty from the robbery to safety from the crooks.

A year has passed since Kalle Blomquist helped arrest three dangerous jewel thieves. Meanwhile, his friends laugh at him again when he plays the master detective.

But then a murder happens in Kleinköping and Eva-Lotta of all people finds the body. She was also the only one who saw the suspected murderer. Kalle lost his interest in detective work. But when arsenic-poisoned chocolate finds its way into Lisander's mailbox and the three friends meet the murderer in an abandoned house, he can make a decisive contribution to solving the case.

Origin and origin of the name

From 1937 on, Lindgren worked as a stenographer for the Swedish professor of forensics Harry Söderman . It is believed that this activity was one of the sources of inspiration for the later crime stories about Kalle Blomquist. On the other hand, a former pastor of the Pelarne church probably served as the template for the name of the master detective . Astrid Lindgren's parents married in this church in 1905. The pastor who performed the wedding was called Karl Blomqvist.
