The village of Vabres, on the left of the Allier, belongs to the canton of Saugues and has been part of the Alleyras municipality since 1966 . The part of Alleyras to the right of the Allier belongs to the canton of Cayres .
On January 1, 2007, the municipalities of the canton of Saugues moved from the Arrondissement Le Puy-en-Velay to the Arrondissement Brioude . Vabres remained with Alleyras in the Arrondissement of Le Puy-en-Velay. This made the canton of Saugues the only canton whose area was not entirely within an arrondissement.
