Kevin Edward McHale (born December 19, 1957 in Hibbing , Minnesota ) is a retired American basketball player . From 2011 to 2015, McHale coached the Houston Rockets .
NBA
Between 1980 and 1993 he played in the NBA for the Boston Celtics team . McHale is eight feet tall and played in the power forward position . In 1981, following his first year as a professional, he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Team . In 1984 and 1985 he was voted the best sixth man , the best substitute player in the NBA. Once, in 1987, he was called up to the All-NBA First Team. He was also appointed to the All-Defensive First Team for three consecutive seasons (1986, 1987 and 1988). He was also elected to the NBA All-Star Team seven times. Together with Larry Bird and the Celtics, he won a total of three championships in the NBA (1981, 1984 and 1986). In 1999 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
Coaching career
After retiring from his career, McHale became manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1994 . He was also a brief coach for this team: in 2005 as an interim coach for Flip Saunders and in the 2008-09 season . He then left the Wolves and took over on June 1, 2011 the post of coach with the Houston Rockets . McHale extended his contract for another three years in December 2014, but was fired on November 18, 2015.
