The state elections in Tyrol in 1989 took place on March 12, 1989. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) lost around 16 percentage points and achieved the worst result in its history. Although the ÖVP lost its absolute majority of votes and six mandates, it was able to maintain its absolute majority with 19 mandates. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) also lost 2.4 percentage points, but was able to keep its nine mandates. The big election winner was the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which gained around 9.5 percentage points and was able to increase its number of seats from 2 to 5. The Green Alternative Tirol also made it into the Tyrolean state parliament for the first time with three mandates. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), the United Greens of Austria (VGÖ) and the Tyrolean State List (TAB) missed the necessary percentage hurdle for entry into the state parliament.
In 1989, 434,471 people were eligible to vote in the state elections, which meant an increase of 30,536 people eligible to vote. The turnout had increased from 88.77% in 1984 to 90.89%.
