State election in Tyrol 2003
The state elections in Tyrol in 2003 took place on September 28, 2003.
After taking office in October 2002, Governor Herwig van Staa announced early elections. According to plan, the elections did not take place until March 2004.
The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was able to make profits again for the first time since 1984 and was able to win two mandates. With 20 of 36 mandates, the ÖVP again achieved the absolute majority of mandates. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) was also able to improve its result and won one of its 8 seats so far. However, the green alternative Tirol (GRÜNE) won the most, almost doubling its share of the vote and gaining two mandates. With their 5 mandates, the Greens also overtook the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which fell from 19.6% to 8.0% and lost 5 of its 7 seats so far. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) clearly missed entry into the state parliament.
The voter turnout plummeted in the state elections and fell from 80.6% in 1999 to 60.9%.
