The series Law & Order: Trial by Jury is the third offshoot of Law & Order and started in the USA in March 2005. It focuses less on the police investigation, but shows the crimes from the point of view of judges, lawyers, defendants and the Jury. After just two months and twelve episodes, Law & Order: Trial by Jury was canceled, even though the ratings, with an average of 12.2 million, were even ahead of the most direct competitor, Numbers - The Logic of Crime , which had just started . That same year, Dick Wolf made it clear in an interview with the Associated Press that he had actually been promised a sequel to the series and that NBC practically stabbed him in the back with the dismissal. There were similar complications later with the cancellation of the Law & Order main series.

The thirteenth episode of Trial by Jury was late for primary airing in January 2006. The production suffered a serious setback, even before it was broadcast, with the death of Jerry Orbach , Lennie Briscoe , the longest-serving detective in the Law & Order franchise , originally intended to guarantee ratings. Orbach can only be seen in the first two episodes and was then replaced by Scott Cohen . Trial by Jury was the first Law & Order series ever to be canceled. Another followed five years later: the mother series Law & Order . (Except for the spin-off Conviction , which was not nicknamed Law & Order in the title.)

A special feature of the series is that, despite its only 13 episodes, it includes guest appearances by almost all of the stars of the series Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and one crossover episode each with these series. Fred Dalton Thompson played his main role from Law & Order here on a regular basis, whereas he was only seen sporadically in other Law & Order spin-offs. With Carey Lowell , a former Law & Order leading actress continued her role in two episodes . Her figure had now made the rise from assistant public prosecutor to judge. As a result of the participation of all these characters, the series contributes relatively strongly to the networking within the Law & Order franchise , despite its short-lived nature . Added to this is the coincidence that in two episodes, Peter Coyote and Alfred Molina , two actors can also be seen who later took on leading roles in Law & Order: LA - the only series set in America with Law & Order in the name that follows Trial by jury was started.
