Preliminary round
September 18, 1969, 3 p.m.
The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.
Here, too, there was a questionable division of the races. Two runs were carried out with only four participants each, who qualified for the semifinals just by reaching the goal. In the other two races with six athletes each, however, the athletes had to fight for the semi-finals. Two of them were eliminated from these races.
