Lena and Leni are short forms of various female first names such as Magdalena , Helena and Jelena / Yelena . The name Helena comes from the Greek. It goes back to the word "hele" = "sunshine" ( Helios = Greek sun god) and thus means "the shining one", "the torch", "the shine" or "the sun likeness". Helena in Greek mythology was the daughter of Zeus and Leda.
