List of cellar lanes in Burgenland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of cellar lanes in Burgenland is topped by the cellar lanes in the Austrian state of Burgenland .

Typical for Burgenland are cellar districts rather than cellar lanes, the cellars are not arranged along a street, but in piles outside the localities. In general, cellar lanes that resemble the Lower Austrian cellar lanes are more likely to be found in the area around Lake Neusiedl and the cellar district in southern Burgenland, but there are some exceptions in both cases.

The cellar lanes on the north bank of the Neusiedlersee consist largely of earth cellars with facades in the form of a shield wall or with small press houses. In southern Burgenland, on the other hand, the cellar districts have a different character: there are around 1000 Kellerstöckl .

The cellar district, which comprises around 80 Erdkeller, is located outside the village, between the southwestern edge of the village and the Tiergarten corridor. Cellars were dug into the clay here, especially from 1760; In 1818 the cellar district already had 42 cellars. Many of the cellars were restored in the 1930s; stones from the zoo wall were often used for this. In 1992 the Urbanus chapel was built in the cellar district. In the last few years, some basements have been extended with porches.

Around 1850, the cellar district was laid out just outside the city walls, as the cellars in the somewhat lower-lying area were at risk of flooding. About 50 cellars are located in the Kellergasse; most of them are vaults made of limestone blocks that have been covered with a thick layer of earth. On the occasion of the Kellergassenheuriger, from April to November the first Saturday of the month is served in most cellars.
