The list of crossroads in the Main-Tauber district includes open-air crossroads for places that belong to the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg . It is primarily sorted by location, regardless of whether it is a district, municipality or city. The Way of the Cross is the last journey of Jesus Christ's passion and is now mainly represented with 14 stations. The way of the cross to the Stammberg chapel in Tauberbischofsheim, on the other hand, comprises only seven stations, which are supposed to remind of the “seven sorrows of Mary”. The Assamstadter Kreuzweg comprises 16 stations, 14 of which are actual stations of the cross as well as a preliminary and a final station. In most of the Catholic churches in the Main-Tauber district there are also representations of the Way of the Cross along the side walls in the form of pictures, reliefs or simple depictions of the story of the Passion. Since the Wertheim area and the area from Bad Mergentheim to Niederstetten are predominantly evangelical, there are hardly any open-air crossroads, with exceptions such as the Way of the Cross to the Laudenbach mountain church .

The Main-Tauber district has been characterized by a continuous agricultural structure since the Middle Ages. In modern times there was no densification of settlement and industry as in the metropolitan areas, so that cultural monuments in the open , such as wayside shrines and ways of the cross have largely been well preserved. For this reason, according to Bernhard Losch, the Main-Tauber district is also home to most of the murder and atonement crosses of all districts in Baden-Württemberg.

The inauguration of the fourteen-station Stations of the Cross to the Kreuzkapelle took place in 1759 by the Tauberbischofsheim Franciscans . The 12th chapel was called " Kalvarienberg " because it was larger than the rest and in the "Kalvarienbergkapelle" there was an altar in memory of the crucifixion. 1,361 steps were counted from the first station to the Calvary; According to legend, this should be the distance from the historical Way of the Cross in Jerusalem.

As early as 1669 a girl from Dittwar found two figures depicting Maria and Johannes in an oak tree while collecting wood at Kreuzhölzle. A pilgrimage to Kreuzhölzle has been documented since 1670 .
