The first monastery in St. Andrä was founded in the 12th century. It was destroyed several times in the course of the Middle Ages and early modern times, most recently in 1683 in the Thirty Years War . In 1711 the reconstruction began in the baroque style and with magnificent furnishings. The new monastery church (today the parish church) was consecrated to the Apostle Andreas in 1729 . Due to high debts, the monastery lost its independence, passed into the administration of the Herzogenburg monastery and was dissolved in 1782. Most of the valuables and the library were auctioned off to cover the debt. After years of changing use, a geriatric center was housed in the monastery building. After its closure, the city took over management of the area at the end of 2015.
