Los Santos is a municipality (municipio) in Colombia in de Santander Department . It extends over the high plateau La Mesa de Los Santos ("The table of Los Santos"). The village of the same name with the seat of the municipal institutions is located about 62 km from Bucaramanga .

geography

Los Santos is located in the province of Soto in Santander at an altitude of 1310 m above sea level. NN in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes and has an average annual temperature of about 21 ° C. The municipality borders on Girón and Piedecuesta to the north, Jordán and Villanueva to the south, Aratoca to the east and Zapatoca to the west .

The municipality has 29 districts, so-called veredas . One of these districts is the village itself, which is further divided into four districts known as barrios .

history

The territory of present-day Los Santos was from before the arrival of the Spaniards indigenous people of Guanes inhabited. In the middle of the 18th century there was already a first chapel and from 1826 its own parish. The place was founded in 1750 by Vicente Rueda and Bartolomé Mantilla.

economy

The mining is the biggest source of income in the region. Above all, gypsum mined that for cement production is used. In agriculture, in addition to tobacco , from which the majority of the population earns a living, coffee , yuca , corn and various types of fruit are grown. The cattle - and chicken farming is another source of income of citizens in addition to agriculture.

tourism

The community offers a climbing park called “La mojarra” and cave hikes where you can see paintings of the Guanes , an indigenous people who inhabited this area. The Chicamocha National Park can be reached from La Mesa de Los Santos via a gondola, with which you can cross the Cañón del Chicamocha and the river of the same name.

Infrastructure

The village of Los Santos has transport links to Piedecuesta and Bucaramanga via buses . A few buses run within the community to reach remote parts. Nevertheless, the motorbike is the main means of transport for the population living there. The village is supplied with electricity through overhead lines from Bucaramanga. There are frequent power outages due to storms. An aqueduct supplies the village with water, but it is not drinkable. A project is currently being started to supply the residents of Los Santos with drinking water (as of 2013). In rural areas, residents mainly get their supplies from free springs or wells.
