The Mainderby is a football game between the Hessian football clubs Kickers Offenbach and Eintracht Frankfurt , which are based on the Main . Offenbacher Kickers currently play in the fourth-class regional league , while Frankfurter Eintracht play in the Bundesliga .

backgrounds

The cities of Offenbach and Frankfurt border each other, and their centers are on different sides of the Main. The origin of the rivalry is unclear: some claim that the dislike of the two clubs due to the tensions between the two cities - Offenbach is traditionally characterized by industry , while Frankfurt has been a major financial metropolis for centuries - is the reason, others lead this to the final to return to the German championship in 1959 .

The second variant is, however, incorrect in that the derby between the two clubs was already considered poisoned in the 1930s. So the derby on January 6, 1935 was so hard that several players were injured on both sides. The highlight of this brutal game was the broken leg of an Offenbach player, who made it difficult for the Frankfurt team to return because the Offenbach audience was upset. A year later, on February 16, 1936, the Kickers returned the favor in their own way. Although it was all about nothing for them on the third to last game day of the Gauliga Südwest 1935/36 , they fought a bitter fight against Eintracht, which was equipped with realistic championship chances, which the magazine “ Fußball ” commented in its edition of February 18, 1936 as follows: “Especially the Local rivals seem to be keen to block the Riederwäldern 's way to the championship. ... That is more than hardship and struggle alone, that is the will to destroy with all means at hand, especially those that are not allowed. It is known that the technicians are vulnerable here, in every sense of the word. The Kickers had nothing to gain, nothing to lose. They didn't need to conjure up a game that was everything else, just not soccer propaganda. And the followers would not do well to reveal that they were fueled not by enthusiasm but by hatred. The kickers really don't need to be proud of this 1: 1. The strange spectators (it wasn't just the Offenbachers, but even more the Bornheimers ) triumphantly started the chorus: 'Hi, ha, ho, Eintracht is ko!' "

Nevertheless, the 1959 championship has certainly intensified the rivalry once again, especially since Eintracht achieved this triumph with their coach Paul Oßwald , who was only signed up before the 1958/59 season and who was responsible for the neighboring club on the south side of the Main for the previous 12 years.

The rivalry was further heated up by the fact, which Offenbach felt was unfair, that Eintracht was included in the newly founded upper house when the Bundesliga was founded in 1963 , while the Offenbacher Kickers were left out. In the 1970s, both clubs met again for a while at eye level when the Kickers spent a few years in the Bundesliga and also won the DFB Cup in 1970 . On the way to this triumph, the OFC had, among other things, prevailed in the quarter-finals against Frankfurt Eintracht.

The last time the Kickers were represented in the football upper house was in the 1983/84 season and soon had to be relegated to amateur football twice ( 1985 and 1989 ). However, there were further encounters in the DFB Cup in 2003 , 2007 and 2009 , all of which were classified as high security games .

In a direct comparison, the »underdog« Kickers Offenbach is still just in the lead and is therefore mentioned first:
