The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company was founded in 1887. The company's first president was the first prime minister of Canada, Sir John A. Macdonald . In 1897 the company expanded into Asia, including China and Hong Kong.
In 1999, the company was listed on the Toronto, New York, Hong Kong and the Philippines stock exchanges. In 2002, the company received official approval from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) to start insurance operations in China. The first branch was opened in Guangzhou. Another branch in Beijing followed in 2003. In the same year, Manulife Financial received approval to open up to 40 branches in the Chinese market.
