Marduk; Metalmania 2008

Marduk is a black metal - band in 1990 in Norrkoping ( Sweden was established). The name is derived from the Babylonian city god Marduk .

history

Marduk was founded by Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson according to the official biography with the goal of becoming the most satanic and blasphemous band of all time. After the demo Fuck Me Jesus , the EP Here's No Peace was recorded in 1991, but initially remained unreleased, and the band performed live several times. In 1992 the debut Dark Endless was released via No Fashion Records , and Marduk gave a few concerts in Sweden, which increased her fan base. Due to a dispute with No Fashion, the band switched to the French record company Osmose Productions in 1993, where the second album Those of the Unlight was released in October 1993 . In 1994 the band performed at a festival in Oslo and thus for the first time outside of Sweden, toured Europe with Immortal and released the album Opus nocturne . After the singing was originally taken over by Andreas Axelsson and Joakim Göthberg , Legion (Erik Hagstedt) became a singer with Marduk in 1995. The Winter War Tour followed in February , during which the band was boycotted in Germany. In addition, the band played for the first time on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, including in June 1995 in Ciudad de México . 1996 saw the release of the first album with Legion, Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered , and after a European tour the EP Glorification , on which the band covered Destruction , Bathory and Piledriver .

In 1997 Marduk went on the Legion tour and released the live album Germania with recordings of performances in Germany from the tour to Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered . In addition, Marduk supported the Norwegian band Mayhem together with Eminence at their first concert after the reunification in Bischofswerda and released the EP Here's No Peace, recorded in 1991, on the Swedish record company Shadow Records. In 1998 Marduk released the album Nightwing , which was reviewed in Rock Hard after the band turned away from earlier statements; The reviewer, Kai Wendel, noted, however, that he found “some of the brown-tinged statements that Morgan, the mouthpiece of the troupe, has made in the past to some fanzines, but a little too dubious to be dismissed as simple backwoods stupidity or promo-effective provocation . But maybe the guy has become a little more mature and smarter over time (interview in the next issue - ed.) ”. The group also played at the No Mercy Festival and the European Black Metal Assault Tour . The following year the band recorded the album Panzer Division Marduk . Then Marduk toured in Scandinavia, Greece and Japan as well as at several festivals, including the Dynamo Open Air . After recording the EP Obedience , the band went on a seven-week tour in autumn.

In 2000 the group released the EP Obedience through their own record label Blooddawn Productions, and toured with Deicide and Cannibal Corpse . Marduk ended the collaboration with Osmose Productions. The band has also performed in Mexico and at numerous festivals such as Wacken Open Air , With Full Force and Waldrock . On Halloween the band gave an anniversary concert in Norrköping and released the double live album Infernal Eternal .

La grande Danse macabre was released in March 2001 . Then the band played on a European tour and a US tour with Deicide, as well as the Graspop Metal Meeting , another short tour and the X-mass festivals. In 2002 a planned tour of the USA had to be canceled. The Blackcrowned box set was released in February . The band fired Fredrik Andersson and recruited Emil Dragutinovic from The Legion as their new drummer. She performed at the With Full Force and the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival and played in the opening act for Gdansk in Europe as well as at the X-mass festivals. In February 2003 the band released World Funeral and played on a European tour as well as at Party.San in August . Morgan Håkansson recorded material for a planned 4-title EP called Portraitt av döda barn ( swe. 'Portraits of toter Kinder'), which, however, remained unreleased. In October Marduk toured Latin America, in December Legion and the band split.

Mortuus 2007 in Paris

In January 2004 Morgan recorded the demo Todes Reich , on which he worked with a drum computer and took over the bass and vocals himself. The new singer is Arioch (Daniel Rostén) from Funeral Mist and Triumphator , who sings under the pseudonym "Mortuus" at Marduk. In February the band released their first DVD Funeral Marches and Warsongs . In May Marduk was part of the main program of the Motala Metal Festival in Sweden. After a pre-production for the next album in the Endarker studio of their former guitarist Devo Andersson , known as a Hastfer session, the band decided to record their next album there. The bass player B.War was replaced by Devo Andersson. With this line-up, the band recorded their album in the summer and played in the main program of the Agglutination Festival in southern Italy. In September selected journalists were invited to Hamburg, where they could hear the album and the band also performed. It was released at the end of November under the title Plague Angel . The band played again at the annual Xmas festivals in Europe and released a limited tour EP, which, like the tour after a contained on the album collaboration with the Swedish martial industrial project Arditi Death March ( Engl. , Death march named ') has been. The appearances planned for 2005 to promote the album were delayed because drummer Emil Dragutinovic broke his arm in a fight. In the summer, however, the band performed again at the Wacken Open Air and toured Europe in late August and September. There were also three concerts in Turkey and selected performances in Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil. For the 15th anniversary a limited live album called Warsaw was released , which was recorded in Poland in the same year.

style

music

Up to and including the debut album Dark Endless , Marduk's style was heavily influenced by Death Metal . According to Daniel Ekeroth, an atmosphere corresponding to Black Metal can only be felt from the second album Those of the Unlight . He described this as Marduk's most traditional black metal recording and probably the "first 100% Swedish black metal album since Bathory's Under the Sign of the Black Mark ". After this album, Marduk's style became even more brutal, the culmination of this development being the album Panzer Division Marduk . This album, with its length of about 30 minutes and its high speed compared to the other albums, is often referred to as the band's Reign in Blood or Black Metal, on which the songs, unlike Slayers Reign in Blood , are very similar so that the album sounds very monotonous.

According to Panzer Division Marduk , the successor La grande Danse macabre "[...] for good reason [...] took a lot of tempo out of the game, but this turned his [Håkanssons] riffs into even more brutal, more precise than ever hitting violence and, above all, Bogges bass." helps to be more present ”. Although the album is much slower than Panzer Division Marduk , according to Legion it is "still typically Marduk".

With the arrival of the current singer Mortuus, according to Christian Wachter from Legacy, there was a "correction in the direction of a more interesting, because occasionally more moderate, although no less dark songwriting". Through his participation, newer Marduk albums also remind of his other band Funeral Mist . Wachter highlights the serpent sermon as particularly varied , on which Into Second Death " convinces with a catchy mixture of Thrash and doomy epic", the musicians at Temple of Decay "indulge in really dark slowness" and songs like Messianic Pestilence or Gospel of the Worm can be played at high speed.

Texts and ideology

Morgan Håkansson is committed to Satanism and transports corresponding content through the band's lyrics. When writing the texts, he is often inspired by the Bible, from which album titles such as Rom 5:12 ( Rom 5.12  EU ) and Wormwood come from; its title, translated 'wormwood', does not refer to the wormwood contained in absinthe , but to ( Rev 8 : 10–11  EU ); the corresponding Bible passage is also quoted on the cover of the record. In addition, the band wrote songs about Vlad III. Drăculea and topics from the time of National Socialism and the Second World War . These issues and earlier statements by Håkansson caused controversy on several occasions; During the Winter War Tour in February 1995, the Rock Hard and Metal Hammer magazines tried to prevent appearances in Germany because Håkansson had " secreted some brown-colored statements [...] to some fanzines "; He spoke out against immigration to Sweden on behalf of the band and said he was proud that his grandfather had served as a German officer in World War II . The cover of the live album Germania also met with criticism; However, Håkansson stated that this was the federal eagle from the reverse of the 1 DM coin . The band decided to record gigs in Germany because it was the best recordings of the Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered tour and Marduk had a very good audience there. Håkansson now distances himself from earlier statements on National Socialism. For him, National Socialism is just one of several fascinating historical topics. Former drummer Fredrik Widigs and singer Daniel “Mortuus” Rostén, however, sympathize with the neo-Nazi organization Swedish Resistance Movement , according to research by the Swedish newspaper ETC , and have acquired large quantities of propaganda material for the movement. Marduk denied in a statement that members of the band had ever ordered material from this organization or had contact with it.

In June a music video for the song Viktoria from the album of the same name was released. In this one can be seen a pin attached to Mortuu's leather jacket, showing two crossed hammers and a sword lying above. The pin itself comes from the Swedish band Arditi , which, like Marduk, deals thematically with World War II, militarism and totalitarian systems, and has already been accused of NSBM several times, including a. due to an EP entitled Everyone his own . The symbol of the pin, the two crossed hammers and the sword show great resemblance to the NSDAP Gau badge of honor in Essen .
