Maria Janion (born December 24, 1926 in Mońki , Podlaskie , † August 23, 2020 in Warsaw ) was a Polish literary scholar , literary critic and university teacher .

Youth and education

During the Second World War she lived with her parents in Vilnius , came to Bydgoszcz as a repatriant in the spring of 1945 , passed the external diploma in Toruń , enrolled in the autumn of 1945 and then studied polonistics at the University of Łódź . In 1949 she moved to Warsaw to, graduated as Magistra at the University of Warsaw , and was from 1951 to 1952 there as an assistant operates. In 1949 she joined the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) and remained a member until it was expelled in 1979. With her dissertation on Lucjan Siemieński , she became an aspirant of Polish philology in 1955 .

Profession and work

From 1957 she taught as a lecturer at the Pedagogical University in Danzig and in 1963 she qualified as an associate professor . In 1970 she was employed at the Institute of Polish Philology at the Polish Academy of Sciences ( Instytut Filologii Polskiej , PAN) of the newly founded University of Gdansk , habilitated as a full professor in 1973 and worked there until 1990. From 1979-1983 she was a member of the Polish Writers' Union (Związek Literatów Polskich), from 1980 she was a member of the Union of Polish Writers (Stowarzyszenie Pisarzy Polskich) , from 1990 a member of the Polska Akademia Umiejętności , from 1991 a member of the Polish PEN Club and the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN ).

In her writings, reviews and publications she dealt with the cultural reception of the Polish and German romantic epochs and their literary figures . Furthermore, she dealt with the literary representation and transmission of Polish heroism , messianism , the position of Judaism and the feminist currents in Polish literature.

From 1997-2004 she was a member of the jury for the Nike Literature Prize . In recognition of her services, she received the Alfred Jurzykowski Foundation Prize in 1980 ; on December 11, 2012, the French ambassador in Warsaw, Pierre Buhlow, presented her with the Ordre national du Mérite, and on June 13, 2013, she was elected honorary citizen of Warsaw .
