Martin Stoll (born February 9, 1983 in Heidelberg ) is a former German soccer player who was mostly used as a central defender .

Career

Youth in Baden-Württemberg

Born in Heidelberg, Stoll began his football career in neighboring Aglasterhausen , where he was formally a member of VfB Breitenbronn from the district of the same name. However, VfB did not set up any teams in Stoll's age group , so he played for the youth teams of SV Aglasterhausen instead . In 1995 Stoll left the club as a D-youth and switched to the nearby SV Sandhausen , for whose D and C-youth he was subsequently active until 1998.

With entry into the B-Jugend Stoll decided to switch again to the Karlsruher SC . Two years later he finally moved from Baden KSC to Württemberg VfB Stuttgart , for whose A-youth he played in the A-junior regional league over the next two years . Stoll was able to qualify with the team in the 2001/02 season as runner-up in the Regionalliga Süd for the final round of the German A-Juniors championship and reach the final in this, but was defeated by FC Bayern Munich , which was already in the Liga before VfB had been able to place.

Meanwhile, the youth coordinator of the Karlsruher SC, Marco Pezzaiuoli , tried to get Stoll back to Baden, whereupon he moved again to Karlsruhe. At the same time, Stoll had been able to recommend himself to the German Football Association through his performance in Stuttgart's youth teams , so that he ran for the German U-20 national team for the first time on August 21, 2002 after changing clubs .

Breakthrough at Karlsruher SC

In Karlsruhe, Stoll was initially assigned to the second substitute trained by Edmund Becker , so that he came to a total of 31 missions in the course of the 2002/03 season of the fourth-class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg . At the end of the season, the team finished 15th in the table in a relegation place, but ultimately Karlsruhe benefited from the forced relegation of the Mannheim reserve team and thus still held the class.

In the summer of 2003, however, Stoll moved up to the professional team of the club, which appeared in the 2nd Bundesliga under coach Lorenz-Günther Köstner and had to compensate for the departures of defenders Clemens Fritz , Thijs Waterink and Torsten Kracht , who were part of the regular formation in the previous season of the KSC had counted. Under these conditions, Stoll managed to establish himself together with Mario Eggimann as a regular player in the Karlsruhe central defense, so that he was called up in 33 of the 34 season games in the 2003/04 season . The season was not very successful for the KSC, so that the team was only able to secure relegation on the last day of the game. Due to his achievements, however, Stoll was able to draw the football association's attention again and in February and April 2004 he made two more appearances in the U-20 team.

In the following season 2004/05 the Karlsruhe team played again against the looming relegation to the regional league , which is why the club replaced coach Köstner with Edmund Becker in the winter. But even under this, Stoll initially remained a regular player and contributed with 32 of 34 possible appearances to the league that was finally achieved, and he also scored his first two goals in professional football. At the beginning of the 2005/06 season , Stoll was once again considered a top performer at KSC and in September 2005 was even appointed to the 2006 team that had been created in preparation for the 2006 World Cup in Germany to promote potential national players. However, Stoll had only been re-nominated due to the rejection of other players, so that his substitution against the A2 selection of Turkey on September 6, 2005 also represented his last game in the jersey of a German national team.

Stoll as a reservist in Karlsruhe

In the further course of the first half of 2005/06, Stoll lost his regular place to Carsten Rothenbach . In December 2005 he was therefore called up for the first time in the reserve team of the KSC, which had meanwhile been promoted to the third-class regional league. In the second half of the second division season, however, Stoll was able to establish himself again in the professional team, so that in March 2006 he extended his contract with KSC, which was due to expire in the summer, by two more years, and came to a total of 18 missions by the end of the season.

Due to the commitment of Maik Franz in the summer of 2006, Stoll was only considered a reservist behind Franz and Eggimann in the 2006/07 season , who were to form the central defense of the KSC in the following. Although the KSC managed to rise to the Bundesliga as champions of the second division this season , Stoll had only contributed to this in ten appearances and instead played four times for the regional league team. Nevertheless, Stoll accepted an offer from the KSC to extend the contract prematurely for another year, so that he was now tied to the club until 2009.

But even in the Bundesliga, Stoll could no longer assert himself in the Karlsruhe team. In 2007/08 he only played eight, in 2008/09 another ten missions for the professional team, while in the same period he played eight games for the reserve team. Although Karlsruhe was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in the summer of 2009 and Stoll's chances of further assignments thus increased, he decided to move to Switzerland , where he found a new employer at FC Aarau .

Stations in Aarau to Rostock

Stoll initially received a three-year contract in Aarau and made a total of 31 appearances in the 2009/10 season of the Super League . Initially under coach Jeff Saibene , then under Martin Andermatt and finally under Ranko Jakovljevic , the club did not succeed in maintaining the class, which is why Stoll's contract was no longer valid in summer 2010.

At first Stoll couldn't find a new employer and in the meantime trained with the reserve team of the Karlsruher SC to keep fit. In October 2010, Stoll then completed a trial training session with FC Hansa Rostock , who had recently been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd division , as a result of which he was finally given a contract until the end of the 2010/11 season . Subsequently, he was used by coach Peter Vollmann in 13 season games, which he had a share in Hansa's recovery that was finally achieved. Hansa also won the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Cup this season , to which Stoll had contributed with two appearances. However, Stoll did not subsequently receive an offer to extend the contract.

Via Dresden back to Karlsruhe

Stoll for the KSC 2016

In the SG Dynamo Dresden Stoll found a new employer, who was as Rostock risen from the third division to the 2. Bundesliga. Equipped with a two-year contract, Stoll then belonged to the regular formation of the Dresden team trained by coach Ralf Loose at the beginning of the 2011/12 season , so that he played the first six league games and one game in the DFB Cup against Leverkusen . Subsequently, however, he lost this regular place and completed only four more appearances in the league during the first half of the season - three of them by substitution - and one more appearance in the DFB Cup against Dortmund . In the second half of the season, Stoll was initially no longer used in the second division, so that in the meantime he also ran up for the reserve team of Dresden in the Oberliga Nordost , before he was used again on the last match day in the 2. Bundesliga. Overall, he was involved in the team's relegation with one goal in eleven games, which they reached as ninth in the final table.

Stoll then dissolved his contract with Dynamo Dresden and returned to Karlsruher SC , which had previously suffered relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd division. In Karlsruhe, Stoll received a two-year contract. After KSC rose back to the 2nd Bundesliga and failed in relegation to the 1st Bundesliga against Hamburger SV , Stoll and the Karlsruhern were relegated to the 3rd division again at the end of the 2016/17 season. At the end of the season he reached the promotion relegation again with the KSC, but failed again. His contract, which expired in June 2018, was extended by one year; at the same time he took over the post as assistant coach of Lukas Kwasniok at the U-19 of the KSC. In the following season, Stoll was only used in the 2: 3 home defeat against Halleschen FC on the last day of the game. After that, he and KSC were promoted to the second division. Stoll was retired before the game.
