Merzenstein is a village in Lower Austria and a cadastral municipality of the municipality of Zwettl-Lower Austria . According to the 2001 census, the cadastral community had 144 inhabitants on an area of ​​34.87 km².

Merzenstein is about 6 kilometers as the crow flies southwest of the city center of Zwettl at the confluence of Königswiesener Straße (B 124) and Böhmerwald Straße (B 38) between Gschwendt and Etzen . The place is connected to the Austrian intercity bus network by post buses .

The municipality borders the cadastral communities of Jahrings and Waldhams to the north , Gschwendt and Uttissenbach to the east, Rottenbach and Marbach am Walde to the south and the Josefsdorf and Oberneustift cadastral communities belonging to Groß Gerungs to the west .

history

Merzenstein was first mentioned in 1291 as Mersenstain . It is a castle name meaning "Castle on the rock, which is named after a man named Marso".

In the vicinity of Merzenstein there is an abandoned quarry with deposits of rock crystals and chalcopyrite . Sources from the 19th century report that the mined material was used to make millstones because of its hardness and porosity .
