Kleinschönau is a village in Lower Austria and has been a cadastral municipality of the municipality of Zwettl-Lower Austria since 1970 . According to the 2001 census, the cadastral community had 97 inhabitants on an area of ​​4.23 km².

Kleinschönau is about six kilometers as the crow flies southeast of the city center of Zwettl and is connected to the Austrian intercity bus network by the Postbus .

The municipality borders on the cadastral community of Kleehof to the north , Eschabruck to the east, Sprögnitz to the south, Rohrenreith to the south-west, Ratschenhof to the west and Rudmanns to the north-west.

  • Kleinschönau was first mentioned on November 10, 1208 as Schoneawwe in a deed of gift. The name means "The beautiful Au". The place existed before it was first mentioned, but the date of foundation is unknown.

  • The local chapel was built around 1830 and belongs to the Zwettl Abbey parish . In 2006, an extensive renovation was carried out by volunteers from the local communities of Kleinschönau and Kleehof.
  • Kleinschönau was an independent municipality until 1968, and was - on 1.1. d. J., with Eschabruck - merged with Friedersbach . Since the voluntary amalgamation of municipalities in 1970, Zwettl has been part of the municipality.
