Directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly , who co- wrote the script with Scot Armstrong , Kevin Barnett and Leslie Dixon . The film is a remake of Elaine May's film The Heartbreaker (1972).

Eddie Cantrow owns a small sporting goods store in San Francisco and has been without a boyfriend for a long time. His friends and especially his father urge him to find a steady partner for life as soon as possible. He made the acquaintance of Lila by chance when he was running after a thief who stole her handbag. Eddie and Lila get to know and love each other. After just six weeks, he married her to prevent her professional transfer to distant Rotterdam . The newlyweds travel together on their honeymoon in Los Cabos , Mexico , where Eddie only really gets to know his wife and becomes increasingly estranged from her. On the way there, she sings all the music on the radio loudly and categorically rules out boat tours due to seasickness. During sex, she asserts her preferences for a harder pace.

In Mexico, Eddie learns that the handbag thief was Lila's "ex", to whom she owes $ 26,000. Her alleged job as an environmental researcher turns out to be an internship with no salary. Having used cocaine in the past , she has a curved nasal septum that sometimes causes her to spit drinks out through her nose. There is an argument, at the end of which Lila runs out of the hotel room. While looking for her, Eddie meets the fun-loving, single Miranda who lives with her relatives in the same hotel. When Lila doesn't listen to Eddie's advice to rub sunscreen on while sunbathing on the beach the next day, she gets sunburned all over her body and blames Eddie for it. From now on she hides in the hotel room to avoid being seen, and Eddie spends much of his free time with Miranda, with whom he eventually falls in love. But he does not tell her that he is actually on his honeymoon.

After Eddie realizes that he and Lila have almost nothing in common, he decides to leave her. Meanwhile, Miranda's relatives recognize Eddie's situation and warn Miranda, who then wants nothing more to do with him. After Lila learns of the relationship with Miranda and furiously burns Eddie's belongings and papers, he tries to return illegally to the United States, which he manages after several attempts. There he visits Miranda and learns that she is now married to her boyfriend Cal, from whom she previously wanted to have a break from their relationship.

After a period of mourning, Eddie decides to start over and moves permanently to Mexico, because his sporting goods business has passed into Lila's possession after the interim divorce. He opens a small shop on the beach in his new adopted home and meets again after 18 months with Miranda, who is now divorced from Cal. She tells him that she now knows what it is like to marry someone without really getting to know him and actually loving someone else, and she makes an appointment with Eddie for the evening. As soon as Miranda has disappeared full of anticipation, Eddie is approached by his current wife Consuela, who is already looking forward to today's get-together for her first wedding anniversary . He replies that he has something to discuss with her later. It's the same situation as with Lila when he decided to break up and wanted to tell her later.
