Awarded four times so far: Roger Deakins

Winner of the National Society of Film Critics in the category Best Cinematography (Best Cinematography) . The awards are presented every year at the beginning of January for the best film productions and filmmakers of the past calendar year. In 1975 and 1977 there were two awards ceremonies in January and December, after which the National Society of Film Critics Award in 1976 and 1978 was not awarded.

The most successful in this category was the Briton Roger Deakins , who won the award four times, followed by his work colleagues Néstor Almendros , Christopher Doyle , Edward Lachman , Philippe Rousselot , Haskell Wexler and Gordon Willis with two awards each. In 2001 and 2020, camera women prevailed with Agnès Godard ( The Foreign Legionnaire ) and Claire Mathon ( Portrait of a Young Woman in Flames and Atlantique ). The German cameramen Thomas Mauch (1977 for Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes ) and Michael Ballhaus (1990 for The fabulous Baker Boys ) as well as the Austrian Christian Berger (2010 for The White Ribbon - A German Children's Story ) made the list of winners from German-speaking countries line up.

At the last award ceremony in 2020, Claire Mathon won by 12 points over Robert Richardson ( Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , 29 points) and Yorick Le Saux ( Little Women , 22 points).
