Nawada is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2494 km². Administrative center is the city of Nawada .

The population is 2,219,146 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 22.63% and was therefore very high. Nawada has a gender ratio of 939 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 59.76% in 2011, an increase of almost 13 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 89% of the population are Hindus and around 11% are Muslim .

Almost 9.7% of the population live in cities. The largest agglomeration is Nawada with 118,768 inhabitants.

Agriculture provides the income for most of the people in the district. The main crops that are harvested in the district are rice , wheat , legumes and vegetables . Industrial facilities in the district include Beedi factories and silk handlooms .
