The New Neunburg Castle is located in the town of Neunburg vorm Wald in the Schwandorf district .

history

The so-called New Palace was the actual manorial residential building of the castle, also known as the Fürstenstock . Its construction is attributed to Elector Friedrich II . A letter from the Count Palatine to the Mayor and Council of the City of Mary's Birth from 1537 is cited as evidence , in which it says that “during a recent stay, the wife of Friedrich liked the residence and place that caused us little to build there ”. This also shows that the New Palace was not a new building, but a conversion of an older part of the castle.

The New Palace later served as the official residence of the keeper or the district judge. In the 19th century, the royal district office was located here.

architecture

The New Castle is a slightly curved, hook-shaped castle complex that is adapted to the mountain plateau on which the old town of Neunburg is located. This connects at an acute angle to the old castle or the Dürnitz .

What stands out on the building is the so-called watch tower at the northwest corner of the building complex. This is a late Gothic building that is faced on the outside with granite blocks, some of which still have pincer holes for moving the stones. Its upper floor protrudes a little on simple corbels and is provided with four corner turrets. These used to be decorated with heraldic shields and helmets made of stone; five of them have survived. The shield shape is that of the 14th century, the coats of arms to the early 15th century. The tower is partially plastered, and large windows have been broken out inside. The stairs used to run within the thickness of the wall. On views of the 17th century, the tower has a high and now a normal tent roof .
