Nicolás Alexander Lapentti Gómez (born August 13, 1976 in Guayaquil ) is a former Ecuadorian tennis player . His younger brother Giovanni Lapentti also became a tennis player. Both are nephews of the French Open winner Andrés Gómez . Her father Nicolás Lapentti Carrión was prefect of the Ecuadorian province of Guayas .
Career
In 1994 Lapentti won the Orange Bowl . He turned professional in 1995 and won the ATP tournament in Bogotá that same year as a qualifier .
In 1997 he won his first two double titles. 1998 defeating Lapentti in the tournament in Kitzbuhel with Yevgeny Kafelnikov (6: 4, 6: 1) for the first time a top ten player.
In 1999 he surprisingly reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open with a five-set win over Karol Kučera . There he was defeated by Thomas Enqvist . In the same year Lapentti won the tournaments in Lyon and Indianapolis . At the end of the season he qualified for the ATP World Championship for the first time and at the end of the year he was number 6 in the world - the best placement of his career.
2000 Lapentti reached the round of 16 of the French Open . In the same year he was a member of the Ecuadorian Davis Cup team , which Great Britain could defeat at Wimbledon . Lapentti defeated Greg Rusedski in five sets.
In the following years he achieved only a few successes such as the tournament victories in Kitzbühel in 2001, in St. Pölten in 2002 and the finals in Palermo in 2006. In July 2008 he was only number 74 in the ATP world rankings .
In January 2011 Nicolás Lapentti announced his retirement from professional tennis.
