Nikolai Valuev ( Russian Николай Сергеевич Валуев , English transcription Nikolay Valuev * 21st August 1973 in Leningrad , Russian SFSR ) is a retired Russian professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA in heavy weight .

Life

Valujew, who began his sporting career as a basketball player and discus thrower , is officially 2.13 m long and weighing up to 150 kg, making him the largest and heaviest heavyweight world champion ever. He has shoe size 52. According to his own information, his height at the age of twelve was already 1.96 m. After graduating from high school, he studied sports at the University of St. Petersburg without a degree.

Valuev is married to Galina Borisovna Valueva (nee Dimitrova). The couple has three children. He lives with his family in Saint Petersburg, but also in Berlin for about five months a year. He names off-road driving, fishing, hunting and reading as hobbies.

Together with the sports journalist Konstantin Ossipow he published his autobiography in 2007 with the title "Meine Twelve Rounds". Valuev also starred in the films 7 dwarfs - The forest is not enough , with Kamennaya bashka and Put .

Since December 2011, Valuyev has been a member of the Russian Duma of the ruling United Russia party .

amateur

Valuev only started boxing at the age of 20. He had only a short amateur career with less than 15 fights. He took part in the Goodwill Games in Saint Petersburg in 1994 , but lost to his compatriot Alexei Lesin in the first fight . He also managed a second place in the Russian championships.

Professional career

Valujew played his first professional fight on October 15, 1993 in Berlin . Seriously, d. H. with regular fights, however, he did not begin his career until the end of 1996, at that time for Klaus-Peter Kohl's Universum boxing promotion . In January 1999 he won the title of Russian heavyweight champion. In the same year he played a fight against Andreas Sidon in Prague , which was not valued. In 2002 he defeated Taras Bidenko in Seoul on points.

Walujew has been part of the boxing stable of promoter Wilfried Sauerland since 2003 . Since 2004 he has defeated the former WBC cruiserweight title holder Marcelo Domínguez , the Nigerian silver medalist at the 1992 Olympic Games Richard Bango , Paolo Vidoz , the then undefeated Americans Gerald Nobles , Attila Levin and Clifford Etienne .

At the World Championship elimination match of the WBA , Valujew boxed himself on October 1, 2005 in Oldenburg against Larry Donald, the mandatory challenger position by a controversial victory with 114: 114, 117: 112 and 114: 113 points.

By a tight and also controversial point victory against the title holder John Ruiz in the Berlin Max-Schmeling-Halle Walujew was able to secure the heavyweight world champion title according to the version of the WBA on December 18, 2005 . Ruiz was not listed as number one in any independent trade magazine and was considered a pupil of Don King .

His first title defense he succeeded on June 3, 2006 in Hanover by technical knockout in the third round against Owen Beck , also a protégé of Don King. On October 7, 2006, Valuev defended his belt against Monte Barrett by technical knockout in the eleventh round in Chicago , Illinois (USA) . In the following, held in the Basel St. Jakobshalle , heavyweight world championship fight, he defended his heavyweight championship on January 20, 2007 against Jameel McCline , who had to give up the fight prematurely because of a knee injury. At the end of the third round, the American fell to the ground after jumping out a kneecap. With a combined weight of 268 kg, the title defense was the heaviest title fight in the history of professional boxing.

Nikolai Valujew is defeated by Ruslan Chagayev .

Valuev - Chagayev

On April 14, 2007 Valuev lost the first compulsory defense of his title against the still unbeaten Uzbek boxer Ruslan Chagayev in the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart in an even fight on points, his first defeat in 48 professional fights. Thereupon he separated from his long-time trainer Manuel Gabrielian and in June 2007 hired Alexander Simin as the new trainer.

More fights

His first fight after losing the WBA title he won on September 29, 2007 in Oldenburg against the French-Canadian Jean-François Bergeron, who was undefeated in 27 professional fights, unanimously on points. As already against Donald and against Ruiz, this judgment of the judges is also considered controversial, which this time related in particular to the height of the point victory. Valuev was ahead on two scoring slips with seven points each and on the third with six points. Henry Maske , who acts as an ARD boxing expert, criticized the height of the point victory in front of the cameras.

On February 17, 2008 Valujew won in Nuremberg superior an elimination match of the WBA federation against the former WBO world champion Sjarhej Lyachowitsch and thus secured another world championship chance. The rematch against Chagayev was supposed to take place in Oberhausen on May 31, but was postponed to July 5, 2008 due to Chagayev's illness. When Chagayev suffered an Achilles tendon rupture a week before the match and could not meet his statutory defense because of this serious and protracted injury, the Uzbeks were stripped of the WBA title. Instead, Chagayev received the status of a "Champion in recess" (world champion waiting), which enabled him to challenge the then reigning WBA world champion until June 26, 2009.

Second World Cup against Ruiz

The WBA then ordered a fight for the vacant WBA heavyweight title between Nikolai Valujew and John Ruiz , which took place on August 30, 2008 in Berlin. Valujew won this fight and became WBA heavyweight world champion for the second time. First a victory was announced with 2-1 judges votes, which was then corrected to 3-0, as WBA supervisor Bob Mack had accidentally awarded the score of the Japanese judges' twelfth round to Ruiz instead of Valuev. At the protest of the Japanese judge, the rating was subsequently corrected.

His last title defense, which he won on points (114: 114 116: 112 115: 114), Valujew denied on December 20, 2008 in Zurich against the 46-year-old ex-world champion Evander Holyfield . After numerous protests, the WBA announced on December 29, 2008 that it would review the verdict.

Next, Valuyev would again face Ruslan Chagayev to determine the sole WBA world champion. The Uzbek had recovered from the Achilles tendon rupture and was now able to successfully contest a fight against Carl Davis Drumond . The fight was scheduled for May 30, 2009 in Helsinki , but the third schedule was also canceled the day before the fight. The reason for this was Chagayev's hepatitis B illness, which he had suffered from for several years and which, according to Finnish law, is a possible risk of infection. Because of this, the Finnish Boxing Association refused him permission to fight in Finland.

A week later, Valuyev received an offer to compete against IBF , IBO and WBO world champion Wladimir Klitschko . The reason for this was that Klitschko's fight against David Haye, which was scheduled for June 20, 2009 in the Veltins-Arena, was canceled due to an injury to the Briton and a high-class replacement opponent was sought; because 57,000 tickets had already been sold, the organizer did not want to cancel the fight evening. Valuev did not want to adjust to another opponent within two weeks and turned down the offer.

Loss of WBA title to Haye

After the former British cruiserweight world champion David Haye had also canceled a planned fight against WBC world champion Vitali Klitschko due to differences of opinion regarding the contract, Hayes management then tried to organize a fight against Nikolai Valujew. Valuev's promotion company Sauerland Event agreed. Valuev lost the fight against David Haye on November 7, 2009 on points (114: 114,112: 116,112: 116).

End of career

Valuev's contract with his doctoral company expired at the end of 2011 and was not renewed. According to his own statements, he no longer has time for sport in addition to his political commitment.
