Norton A. Schwartz (born December 14, 1951 in Toms River, New Jersey ) is a former general in the US Air Force . He was the 22nd Chief of Staff of the Air Force from August 12, 2008 to August 10, 2012 .

education

Schwartz graduated from the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs , Colorado in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in political science. In 1977 he graduated from the Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base , Alabama, and received a Masters of Business Administration from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant in 1983 . A year later, in 1984, he graduated from Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk , Virginia and in 1989 National War College at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington, DC

Military career

After Schwartz graduated from the academy in 1973 and received his officer license as a second lieutenant , he was posted to Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas for a year for pilot training . From 1974 to 1975 he received training on the C-130 "Hercules" at Little Rock Air Force Base and served from 1975 to 1977 as First Lieutenant and pilot of a C-130E "Hercules" in the 776th and 21st tactical airmobile Squadron at Clark Air Base in the Philippines . From 1977 to 1979 Captain Schwartz was flight examiner for C-130E / H "Hercules" in the 61st tactical airmobile squadron at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas . He was then transferred to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Operations and Readiness at the US Air Force Headquarters in Washington, DC until 1980 as a trainee lawyer on the Air Staff Training Program . From 1980 to 1983 he was again a flight examiner for MC-130E in the 8th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field in Florida , where he was promoted to major in 1982 . After his stay at Armed Forces Staff College, he was reassigned to Washington (DC) in 1984 to the US Air Force Headquarters in the Directorate for Plans. In 1985 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel .

From 1986 to 1988 Schwartz was the commander of the 36th Tactical Airmobile Squadron at McChord Air Force Base. After graduating from National War College, he became director of plans and strategies for Special Operations Command Europe, the special operations component of the US European Command , in the Patch Barracks in Stuttgart-Vaihingen in 1989 . From 1991 to 1993, Schwartz, promoted to colonel in 1991 , served as deputy commander and commander of the 1st Special Operations Group at Hurlburt Field. From 1993 to 1995 was first deputy director of operations and then deputy director of troops in the office of the deputy chief of staff for plans and operations at Washington headquarters. From 1995 to 1997, Schwartz was the commander of the 16th Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1996 . He then became commander of Special Operations Command Pacific, the special operations component of US Pacific Command , at Camp HM Smith in Hawaii . From 1998 to 2000 he was Director of Strategic Planning at the US Air Force Headquarters, was promoted to Major General in 1999 and was promoted to Lieutenant General from 2000 to 2002 Commander of the Alaska Command of the NORAD Region Alaska and 11th Division . From October 2002 to 2004 he was director of operations in the Joint Staff under the chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, DC. He then commanded the Joint Staff as director until 2005, before taking command of the US Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois on September 22, 2005 , and was promoted to general in October .

On June 9, 2008 Schwartz was nominated for the post of Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF) and confirmed on August 1 by the US Senate. On August 12, 2008, he then took over the post of CSAF, which he held until August 10, 2012. He was succeeded by General Mark A. Welsh .

On July 22, 2008, Schwartz said at a hearing in the US Senate that the implementation of the plans mentioned in the Russian newspaper Izvestia , in response to the NATO missile defense program in Europe, would also include long-range Tu-160 and Tu-95 MC bombers Landing in Cuba would mean crossing a red line for the USA.
