final

Date: September 6, 1960, 3 p.m.

15 athletes had qualified for the final, among them world record holder Józef Szmidt from Poland, the first 17-meter jumper to improve the Olympic record in his qualification attempt . In the final, he jumped another 34 centimeters in the first round. Nobody could dispute the leadership anymore. In the third attempt, Szmidt added another three centimeters. Behind him, two Soviet jumpers took second and third place: Vladimir Gorjajew won the silver medal 18 centimeters behind, ahead of Witold Krejer, who was another 20 centimeters behind.

Adhemar Ferreira da Silva, who had dominated the triple jump competitions of the last two Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 and in Melbourne in 1956 , was again at the start in Rome . But the standard of performance had evolved and da Silva was no longer in the shape of previous years, so this time it was only 14th in the final.

Józef Szmidt won the first Polish gold medal in the triple jump .
