The Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States , AKP for short ( English African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States for short OACPS ; French for L'Organisation des États d'Afrique, des Caraïbes et du Pacifique , for short OEACP ) is an international organization of currently 79 countries in Africa , the Caribbean and the Pacific - mostly former colonies of France and Great Britain . The founding document of the organization is the so-called Georgetown Agreement , which contains contractual agreements for mainly economic cooperation.
The main goals are the sustainable development of the member states, their integration into the world economy and the establishment of a "new, fair and just world order". From the beginning, the focus was on coordinating the economic ties between the member states and the European Union. Embedded in a series of agreements ( Lomé Conventions I to IV), the cooperation between the ACP group and the EU is the greatest example of (economic) "North-South cooperation".
In recent years the AKP Group has expanded its focus from the EU to the world community and implemented a number of measures within the World Trade Organization (WTO).
As part of its common trade policy , the EC concluded the Lomé Agreement with the ACP states, which is strongly motivated by development policy . The first agreement, which was later renewed several times, was signed in Lomé , Togo in 1975 . With it, the EU countries wanted to take their colonial past into account, among other things . The agreement is primarily based on a system of tariff preferences designed to facilitate these countries' access to the EU market. Funds were also made available to stabilize the prices of export goods from these countries. The successor to the Lomé Convention, which expired on February 29, 2000, is the Cotonou Convention .
