Petar Popović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Петар Поповић ; born July 28, 1979 in Belgrade , SR Serbia ) is a Serbian basketball player . The participant for Serbia and Montenegro in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens played for various clubs across Europe. His greatest successes with a club team include winning the ULEB Cup 2007/08 and winning the Adria League in 2005. In addition to an Italian championship, Popović also won various cup titles in various countries. In the basketball Bundesliga 2012/13 he played for the German first division club Dragons from the Artland community .

Career

Start in Serbia and Montenegro (until 2005)

Popović played his first senior league games at KK Budućnost from Podgorica , the capital of the then part of Montenegro . For the 1999/2000 season he moved from Master Budućnost to KK Spartak from Subotica , who, however, was relegated at the end of the season from the top national division YUBA . He then played in his hometown of Belgrade for KK Red Star, who played a disappointing season and only ended the season in third from bottom of the table. In the summer of 2001 Popović was appointed to a final selection squad for the first time and won the gold medal at the 2001 Universiade in Beijing with the student selection of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . The following season he moved to the Korać Cup finalist KK Hemofarm from Vršac , who was eliminated in the play-offs for the championship against his former club KK Budućnost over the next two years . In the 2003/04 season, the semi-finals beat the main round, the second Red Star, and moved into the final series against series champion KK Partizan Belgrade . The final series was lost with a win in four games and with the runner-up they celebrated the greatest success of the club, which was promoted in 1997.

Then Popović was also appointed to the final squad of the Serbian-Montenegrin national team for the 2004 Olympic tournament . There the reigning world champion disappointed and only won one game out of six preliminary round games. Popović, who was used in only three games, was then no longer appointed for a final squad. In the 2004/05 season they were also qualified as runners-up for the regional Adriatic League . In the final you could win against Partizan and won the first title for the club. In the final series of the national championship, however, they lost in four games against the otherwise dominant team. Also in the European club competition ULEB Cup 2004/05 they played successfully and reached the semi-finals, in which they had a 23-point lead over Makedonikos in the first leg . The second leg, however, turned into a big disappointment when they lost in Kozani 65:96 and missed the final. With 16 points, Popović achieved a halfway normal point yield and was the best point collector of his team, but had to leave the field prematurely with five fouls just like the regular top scorer Nebojša Bogavac .

Title successes in Italy and Spain (2005 to 2010)

After the successes in his home country, Popović moved to the Italian Lega Basket Serie A for the 2005/06 season for the local cup winner Benetton from Treviso . As second in the main round you could win in the final series of the Italian championship play-offs in four games against defending champion Climamio Bologna . In the most important European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2005/06 , they failed because of the poorer direct comparison on entry into the play-offs of the best eight teams. After this season he first returned to Serbia and played again for Red Star. In the championship you played in the semifinals against your former Hemofarm, who had become first in the main round. Nevertheless, they won the first two games of the " best-of-three " series and moved into the final, which from Popović's point of view was again lost in four games against Partizan. In the Adriatic League, sixth place was missed in the final round of the best four teams.

For the 2007/08 season, Popović moved abroad again and played in the Spanish ACB league for DKV Joventut from Badalona . In a squad together with, among others, the later NBA professionals Rudy Fernández and Ricky Rubio as well as the German national player Jan Jagla and Demond Mallet , who moved to Badalona from the German basketball league , they won the " Copa del Rey " cup competition and second place in the regular playing time. In the ULEB Cup 2007/08 they marched through to the final with only one defeat in the preliminary round, which they could win with 25 points difference against their national competitor Akasvayu Girona . In the play-offs of the championship, however, the local rival FC Barcelona from the Catalan capital remained without a win in the semi-final series . Popović himself got on the team as a supplementary player to an average of about ten minutes per game in both championship and international games. For the following two seasons he moved to league rivals CB Estudiantes in the Spanish capital Madrid , where he later came to twice as much playing time. The traditional club was only able to improve by one place to 13th place in the table in the first season, but was far from reaching the play-off places. With the new name sponsor Asefa, they returned to the top eight teams in Spain in the 2009/10 season. In the first round of the play-offs, however, they were eliminated against Caja Laboral .

Stations in Russia, Serbia, Germany and Turkey (since 2010)

In the 2010/11 season Popović won the Russian Cup competition with Spartak from Saint Petersburg , but it was played without the three best Russian teams that played in the VTB United League 2010/11 . In the third European club competition EuroChallenge 2010/11 , Spartak was the favorite after only two defeats in group matches to win the title at the Final Four tournament in Ostend, Belgium. But they lost the semi-final against national competitor Lokomotive Kuban Krasnodar and the “small final” for third place against host Telenet Oostende and ended up only in fourth place. For the season 2011/12 Popović returned to Serbia to Red Star, who wanted to be challenged by Partizan after the merger with FMP Železnik Belgrade and were trained by Svetislav Pešić . In the 2011/12 Adria League they finished in a disappointing tenth place. In the national championship they won in the semifinals against Radnički Kragujevac , but lost the final series again against Partizan in four games after they had already lost the cup final against this team. For the season 2012/13 Popović got a contract with the German first division club Artland Dragons, who also signed his former teammate from Badalona Demond Mallet. However, the two veterans could not help the team to sustainable success and after a sixth place in the regular season, they were eliminated in the first play-off round for the championship against the previous runner-up ratiopharm Ulm . For the following season Popović moved to the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi to Petkim GSK from Aliağa . After a knee injury, the contract was terminated prematurely at the end of November 2013 and Popović tried a comeback in his home country at Metalac from Valjevo in March 2014 .
