The Portuguese Athletics Federation (FPA port. For the Portuguese Athletics Federation) is the governing body for athletics in Portugal . The FPA is based in Linda-a-Velha , a municipality in the Oeiras district , near Lisbon .
The FPA maintains its center of excellence ( Centro de Alto Rendimento , CAR) in Vila Real de Santo António , which is also a center of excellence of the IAAF world association .
All four Olympic gold medals that Portugal has won so far (2012) have been won by athletes from the FPA.
history
The association was founded on November 5, 1921. It was initially called Federação Portuguesa de Sports Atléticos and was later given its current name. After Portuguese athletes competed at the Summer Olympics in Stockholm in 1912, the FPA organized the Olympic participation of Portuguese athletes for the first time at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris.
On October 6, 1998, the FPA was awarded the Order of Infante Dom Henrique honorary.

The FPA belongs to the umbrella organization Confederação do Desporto de Portugal and the Comité Olímpico de Portugal , the Portuguese National Olympic Committee . The FPA is u. a. Member of the International Association of Athletics Federations and the European Athletic Association .

The president is Jorge António de Campos Vieira . In addition to the Presidium and the General Assembly, the FPA has four other organs:

- Conselho de Arbitragem (German: Arbitration Council)
- Conselho Disciplinar (German: Disciplinary Council)
Member associations
22 regional associations are organized in the FPA. On the one hand there are the associations of the 18 districts of continental Portugal , on the other hand the association of the autonomous region of Madeira and the three associations of the autonomous region of Azores .

Key figures
In 2012, the FPA hosted 31 national competitions, including championships, trophies and special competitions. 5,354 athletes and 888 clubs took part. They took place at 17 sports facilities of eight different regional associations.
The total income of 4,519 thousand euros was offset by expenses totaling 4,261 thousand euros in 2012. The main source of income, at 77%, is the state grants that the FPA receives through the Portuguese Olympic Committee and the state sports and youth institute Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude (IPDJ). The additional income comes from sponsoring and marketing.
