The 1977 season of the Primera División was the 74th season (the 46th of the professional era) of the Uruguayan top division in men's football , the Primera División .

The Primera División consisted of twelve clubs in the championship season of 1977, whose teams met twice in a total of 132 championship games played from the beginning of September to the end of December of that year. There were 335 goals. Nacional Montevideo won the championship as first in the table in front of Club Atlético Peñarol and last year's champions Club Atlético Defensor as second and third in the season's final table . River Plate was relegated to the Segunda División . Peñarol and Danubio FC qualified for the 1978 Copa Libertadores .

As in the four previous years, Fernando Morena from Peñarol was the top scorer with 19 goals .
