Putkaste (German Putkas ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Lääne-Nigula (until 2017: rural municipality Martna ) in Lääne County in Estonia .

Population and location

The place has 39 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 19 kilometers southeast of the district capital Haapsalu . Its area is 5.5 square kilometers.

Former manor of the estate

At the beginning of the 16th century the place was a prebend of the canons of Haapsalu. The farm originated during the Swedish rule over the area. From 1628 to 1691 it belonged to Haapsalu County.

From the end of the 18th century it was owned, with interruptions, by the noble Baltic German family Maydell . The last private owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was Herbert Baron Maydell.
