Roessler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The family name Rößler , Rössler or Rösler belongs to the group of professional names . The name is first recorded as Rößeler in 1340 . The name is based on the Middle High German words ros or ors , which mean horse , battle horse or carriage horse . In addition, the name is deminutive of the Middle High German word rössel (in) , someone who has to do with horses , horse breeder , horse owner , horse dealer and carter . According to another interpretation, the name also emerged as a name of origin for the place names Roßla , Roßlau and Rößlau . This name of origin is first documented for 1424.

The origin of the name variant Rösler is partly to be understood as explained above, but partly also as a professional name for the Middle High German röse ( rose ) for a rose grower or rose dealer. In part it is also a deminutive house name zu Rose (Middle High German for rœssel ). However, this interpretation is controversial in name research.

On the other hand, Josef Karlmann Brechenmacher in southern Germany also referred to a “salt transporter”.
