Renato Rascel

Renato Rascel (actually: Renato Ranucci ; born April 27, 1912 in Turin , † January 2, 1991 in Rome ) was an Italian singer and actor . Between 1942 and 1972 he took part in 50 films, due to his small height he was nicknamed il piccoletto nazionale .

Life

As the son of an operetta singer and a ballet dancer, he came into contact with the theater early on and was also musically active. From 1933 he was a regular performer at the Teatro Lirico in Milan . From 1942 he was discovered for the film and played there numerous, mostly humorous roles. An outstanding work was Der Mantel from 1952, for whose leading role he received the Nastro d'Argento .

Musically, Merci beaucoup (1953) and Arrivederci Roma (1955) were his greatest hits. As the winner of the Sanremo Festival in 1960 with the ballad Romantica , he was allowed to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest 1960 in London . Here he reached an eighth place. From the beginning of the 1970s, he again increasingly focused on music and theater.
