The Kraj Vysočina ( German  region highlands ) is one of the 14 regions of the Czech Republic . Until 2001 the region was still called Jihlavsky (Iglauer) Kraj, after that until 2011 only Vysočina (without Kraj). The west of the region is historically part of Bohemia , the east (the majority of Kraj) is in Moravia . The administrative seat is in Jihlava (Iglau). The area of ​​the region is formed by the districts of Jihlava , Havlíčkův Brod , Pelhřimov , Třebíč and Žďár nad Sázavou . There are 704 municipalities in the region with an average population of 725, of which 33 are cities. The largest part are municipalities with up to 500 inhabitants.

The region occupies a central location in the Czech Republic with an area of ​​6,796 km² (up to December 31, 2005 it was 6,925 km²). It borders on the regions of South Bohemia , Central Bohemia , Pardubice and South Moravia . The Kraj Vysočina is sparsely populated and is on average higher than other districts. The sparse population in small towns often leads to the migration of young people in particular to the cities. Most of the area is covered by the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands . The highest point is the Javořice (Jaborschützberg) with 837 m above sea level. M., the lowest the Švihov dam with 253 m above sea level. M. The Melechov mountain near Havlíčkův Brod (Deutschbrod) is referred to in some sources as the geographical center of Europe. The water and air pollution in the region is low. It is considered a water reservoir for the surrounding regions. In the Hochland region, two large nature reserves were declared, Žďárské vrchy (German: Saarer Berge ) and Železné hory ( Eisengebirge ).

economy

94,000 companies mean the penultimate place in the ranking of the Czech Republic. Most of them settled in the former Okres Třebíč (21,788) (as of the end of 2005). In terms of gross domestic product, the region also ranks next to last with a share of 4%. The gross monthly wage is CZK 18,069, making it one of the lowest in the Czech Republic . Unemployment was around 4.48% as of March 31, 2017. Agriculture traditionally continues to play an important role. Potatoes and oil plants thrive in the relatively cool climate, and there is also cattle breeding. Industrial companies turned over 80 billion crowns in 2003, an increase of 5.7% over 2001. Mechanical engineering, metal processing, textile industry, wood processing and food industry make up the largest share. In Dolní Rožínka is the only uranium mine still in operation in the country.

Demographics

As of January 1, 2017, there were 508,952 inhabitants in the region, 50.3% of them women. The birth rate increased in 2006, as did the number of divorces, while fewer people got married.

Transport infrastructure

The important European motorway D1 / E50 / E65 ( Berlin - Prague - Brno - Vienna / Bratislava - Budapest ) runs through the region . However, the north-south connection is bad.

Education and Healthcare

Education is provided by 276 kindergartens, 251 primary schools, 31 vocational schools, 39 technical high schools, 18 high schools, 14 institutions of post-secondary education and 2 universities. 1,684 doctors work in the region. The health facilities include 11 hospitals with 2,866 beds. (As of 2005)

Sightseeing and recreation

Several international cultural events take place in the region every year:

There are good snow conditions in the Žďárské vrchy and Svratecká hornatina. Water sports and swimming opportunities exist at Velké Dářko .

politics

The governor (Hejtman) of the region has been the independent doctor Jiří Běhounek , who is a candidate for the social democratic ČSSD , since 2008 . He is the third Hejtman after the Christian Democrat František Dohnal ( KDU-ČSL ) (2000-2004) and Miloš Vystrčil from the ( ODS ) (2004-2008).

In the last regional parliament elections in 2016, the ČSSD was the strongest political force with 19.37% and received 11 of the 45 seats. 9 mandates went to the second strongest force ANO (17.04%), 7 to the KDU-ČSL (13.41%), 6 to the communist KSČM (11.4%) and 5 to the ODS (9.1%) . The regional electoral group “Pro Vysočinu” (For Highlands) received 6.84% and 4 seats. The remaining 3 mandates were awarded to SPO + SPD (6.4%). The remaining votes were cast for parties that failed because of the 5% threshold . The turnout was 37.34%.

The 9-person regional council is composed of 5 members from ČSSD, 2 members from ANO and 1 member each from ODS and Starostové.
