Reid Philip Simpson (born May 21, 1969 in Flin Flon , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and official as well as current scout , who played 311 games for the Philadelphia Flyers , Minnesota North Stars , New Jersey Devils , Chicago Blackhawks , Tampa Bay Lightning , St. Louis Blues , Canadiens de Montréal , Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Simpson, who embodied the player type of the Enforcer , won the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League with the Albany River Rats in 1995 .
Career
Simpson first played in lower class junior ice hockey in his hometown of Flin Flon . He then worked for the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League from 1986 to 1990 . He had previously been used twice for the New Westminster Bruins .
After the striker in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft was selected in the fourth round in 72nd place by the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League , he moved to the professional field in the summer of 1990. There he played for the Flyers farm team in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears . In the three years in the organization Simpson played with the exception of one game in the dress of the Flyers in the NHL exclusively with the Bears. At the end of the 1991/92 season his contract finally expired and was not renewed by Philadelphias. It wasn't until December 1992 that the free agent found a new employer in the Minnesota North Stars . For the team he also played only one game and was mainly used for the Kalamazoo Wings in the International Hockey League . This did not change with the move of the Borth Stars to Dallas, Texas and the renaming to Dallas Stars in the summer of 1993.
In March 1994, the attacker was transferred for the first time in his career. With Roy Mitchell he moved to the New Jersey Devils . Until January 1998 Simpson was active for the franchise , but again mostly belonged to the farm team roster. With the Albany River Rats , he completed his best season in the 1994/95 season with 43 points scorer in 70 games. He also won the Calder Cup with the team at the end of the season . After the Devils parted ways with the winger in January 1998 via a new transfer deal, a time began for him with many club changes and injuries.
First he was active for the Chicago Blackhawks until November 1999 , where he was able to establish himself for the first time in the NHL. In exchange for the Swede Michael Nylander he got to the Tampa Bay Lightning together with Bryan Muir . A jaw injury sustained in January 200 ultimately led to the Lightning not extending his contract. Simpson joined the St. Louis Blues in the 2000/01 season . Here, too, he was long incapacitated by a groin injury, which St. Louis did not extend the one-year contract. As a free agent, the Canadian came to the Canadiens de Montréal , from there in January 2002 via the waiver to the Nashville Predators and in the summer of 2003 - again as a player without a contract - to the Pittsburgh Penguins . Only in Pittsburgh did he fail to earn a place in the NHL regular squad and was thus active for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL.
Since the NHL season 2004/05 was completely canceled due to the lockout , Simpson played from March 2005 for the Rockford IceHogs in the United Hockey League , before moving to Russia for the 2005/06 season. There he joined the super league club Vitjas Chekhov for two years . In particular, by the accumulation of 556 penalty minutes in 79 games, Simpson made the name of an enforcer there . In the summer of 2007 the chapter on Russia ended before he was appointed assistant to the general manager Chekhov for the 2008/09 season . The engagement ended after a season. Simpson returned to the AHL for 14 games at the end of the 2009/10 season for the Chicago Wolves , but then ended his active career at the age of 41 for good. Since summer 2016 he has been employed as a scout for his ex-team Canadiens de Montréal.
