HC Robbins Landon (full name: Howard Chandler Robbins Landon ; born March 6, 1926 in Boston , Massachusetts , †  November 20, 2009 in Rabastens , Tarn , France ) was an American musicologist .

Life

Robbins Landon studied music at Swarthmore College and Boston University . He then moved to Europe and worked there as a music critic . Since 1947 he dealt with Joseph Haydn in Vienna and is considered a recognized expert on this composer. His book Symphonies of Joseph Haydn was published in 1955, followed by the five-volume work Haydn: Chronicle and Works in the late 1970s. Together with his wife Christa Landon , he also edited numerous compositions by Haydn.

Robbins Landon also published works on other composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonio Vivaldi . He coined the critical term "barococo" for certain types of stereotypical performance of baroque and early classical music, which encouraged their "sidelong listening" and was promoted by the advent of the long-playing record .

In 1956, Robbins Landon attempted to supplement Mozart's C minor Mass , and in 1991 Mozart's Requiem , which was also incomplete .

Landon, who among other things had campaigned for the establishment of Haydn care in Eisenstadt , received the Joseph Haydn Prize of the Burgenland state government in 1989 .

In 1994, a controversy arose when several piano sonatas surfaced, which Robbins Landon initially regarded as newly discovered works by Haydn, but then had to declare them to be forgeries (in fact, they came from Winfried Michel ).
